He tends to think his opinion is fact and if you state a differing opinion you are putting him down. Pretty horrible way to live. I usually keep my trap shut, but I have my limits! Anyhow...nothing I can't deal with. It's just a shame, He's so judgmental and angry all the time. He has been this way for a while, way before the stroke. The stroke definitely hasn't helped. Life goes on. But, I digress from my digression, I'm here to sooth the savage beast with good vibes!

Hi Paul
Long time caller
First time listener
In reference to the Emo reference
The Dischord bands at the time of Egghead embrace ignition etc. were coined Emo by the old time Straight Edgers. They wanted to make sure no one mistook these records for Hardcore or straight edge. Many of the early Straight Edge bands evolved into that Emo genre. Then somehow the Emo genre became a completely different scene so the Dischord type bands dropped the Emo label. ( the reference)
Avatar 6:46pm

hence, why many people differentiated said bands as either emocore or screamocore….

  6:53pm
JakeGould:

When I first heard the word “emo” being used to describe a genre is was literally just a Dischord records thing with the “Rites of Spring.” Then I heard it used to describe “The Promise Ring.” And then — somehow ” “My Chemical Romance” is emo? I barely get that.

@MrPumpy: Don’t sweat it too much. For perspective, my dad always had financial stress but never took it out on others in the family. Then after he had heart surgery, I was a kid and he sent me out to buy a bottle of vitamin C. I didn’t know there were different types, so I bought a pricier bottle with rosehips in it and he flipped out.

Hospitalization can really just bring frustration to the fore. Weather it out.

@PJ: The Dischord connection is very real, “Emo, which began as a post-hardcore subgenre, was part of the 1980s hardcore punk scene in Washington, D.C. as something different from the violent part of the Washington, D.C. hardcore scene. Minor Threat fan Guy Picciotto formed Rites of Spring in 1984, using the musical style of hardcore punk and combining the musical style with melodic guitars, varied rhythms, and personal, emotional lyrics. Many of the band's themes, including nostalgia, romantic bitterness and poetic desperation, became familiar tropes of later emo music.”

@JakeGould: I was not part of the “scene”, but I did go to tons of shows in that time period, and I honestly don’t recall anyone using the term “emo”. Could be that I was not paying attention, or that I was not in the right circles (more likely), but it just sounded funny when I first heard it in the ‘90’s - isn’t all music emotional?

jeez -the alcohol connection too.
my father used to drink over a pint of hard liquor in a night, several night/week for decades. he was funny and was known as a life of the parties. then when my older brother's alcohol problem became unavoidable he quit. i'd say cold turkey but i don't think he had withdrawal symptoms. he'd already quit smoking a few years before that.

The thing about cable news and even AM radio is many people who — honestly — are inherently conservative just listen and watch that stuff all day. On the “left” nobody really just sits and listens to the liberal/left media with the same immersive passion. wire (for example) was not "post punk" it was either punk or it wasn't.
- at the time it was called punk.

@Jake: Yep, my Mom has it on 24/7, and even my father has AM radio on his car all the time.

I sometimes listen to NPR stations just to laugh at some of the callers. But it’s like a handful of days at most a week and maybe for 2 hours and its done. Endless conspiracy and hate-mongering as audio wallpaper is terrifying to me.

my sister listens to "leftist" radio fairly obsessively.
not as blatantly fabricated but just as bad as fox "news" if you ask me -as far as creating a closed-minded, one-sided perspective.

@coelacanth∅: Oh yeah, but the ratio of left-leaning people listening to that stuff is far less than on the right side of things.

@chresti: There are always exceptions to the rule. Like maybe there is a MAGA-hat wearing person I can have a rational discussion with. But I don’t have the strength, energy or desire to wade through that social muck to find them.

Thank you, DJ Paul - It's been a great mix to listen to whilst getting some gardening done today!

Jake, one thing I find particularly distasteful about NPR is their week end programming targeted at my age group. As if all the dockers wearing shmoes need to catch up on the world of everything they ignored during the work week. Total middle brow crap.
