I was at a friend's house last week, just in the living room. Her phone was up in a drawer upstairs, and Alexa lives in the back room downstairs. I mentioned that I had been fortunate enough to attend someone's birthday party at a resort in Sussex NJ without identifying it by name. The next day she got advertisements on her Facebook for the resort. I'm sorry, but this stuff is terrifying.

@PigeonsAndRust: I would recommend getting a browser extension like Ghostery to block trackers, which is one way the Machine knows how to target ads (it's a different deal with Alexa and voice-activated tech I know). It's really shocking how many trackers most websites foist onto PCs, Ghostery shows you a list of them every time.
