TDK60:

Is this Indian music? Turkish? The stringed instrument sounds similar to a Turkish tanbur, maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
David Dichelle:

Hey there TDK60 - it is in fact Kurdish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Passaic River Blues:

@TDK60: the internet says Kurdish. The vocal range on the singer is astounding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
David Dichelle:

Hello Passaic River Blues, indeed it is - the singer is Donya Kamali.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Hey David and fellow riders
Avatar 3:24pm

Thanks David, Passaic R.B. Still may be a tanbur then, maybe? Love tanburs; if anyone has one gathering dust in the attic that they no longer want, please let me know...

Avatar 3:31pm
TDK60:

Thanks for the lineup, David. A search on Wikip. shows the tanbur and tambura to be the same thing, in this Kurdish case. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
David Dichelle:

True, there are often many linguistic variants for the same instruments in the region (all regions?).
Avatar 🚂 3:33pm

A bendir is a frame drum with a kind of a snare in it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Mark Hurst:

Hi David! Hi Webham!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Webhamster Henry:

No expert - but my kids used to have one before the snare broke!
Avatar 3:41pm
TDK60:

..it can get confusing as, for example, there's the Croatian-Serbian tambura (or tamburitza), the Turk-Kurd-etc. tanbur, and the Indian tambura, all different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
David Dichelle:

Hello Mark!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
David Dichelle:

Henry: Well that can certainly make you an expert and fast!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Webhamster Henry:

It's like citera, gitter, guitar, citar, and so forth, not to mention lutes and l'oud. People hear an instrument name and a description and then make up whatever they want!
  3:47pm
Dean:

Then there's the stringed tar and the skinned tar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
David Dichelle:

That must be the origin of the expression "et citera".
  3:47pm
Martinibomb:

Hullo David! and the rest of u I already know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
David Dichelle:

Hey there Martinibomb - and Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Webhamster Henry:

"Cetera" means "other things", probably used as "Whatchamacallits".
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
chris:

et citera must be everything else you give up to master playing the damn things. hi, David and folks. enjoying the tunes!
Avatar 3:52pm
TDK60:

David, I never heard of the Roud list of songs til your show. Aside from loads of fun listening to WFMU, I can get me some a-learning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
David Dichelle:

Hey Chris - yes, that would be citera criteria.
Avatar 🚂 3:54pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm

I was wondering if there are local (to you) folk groups that can fill in a few underpopulated Roud songs for you.
This German version goes well with the Scottish one!

i notice the sign says clean drinking water, not beer. that's too bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
David Dichelle:

The sign actually says "No Drinking Water", so even worse! On the other hand there are any number of pubs and shops all around there.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
chris:

oh, haha! i guess my eyes lied to me. maybe too much beer :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
