Also quite enjoying this Oren Ambarchi track. Your show today so far is fitting my "sitting in a warm, cozy house sipping coffee with two dozing dogs and the wind howls outside" mood. (The dogs aren't sipping coffee--sentence structure is key, isn't it?)

OK, 1st music purchase of the new year (the Webber). I noticed the driving trombone while it was playing, Jacob Garchik on the album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am

@Peter: I honestly don't know, but would guess that overdubs are involved.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:42am

Agreed. But perhaps overdubs added to a live duo performance. (And it still amazes me how much of this kidn of thing can indeed be performed live with a lot of gizmos.)

I am not at yoga today! That means wall-to-wall D:O Radio! (Though I have to admit, I have an ear to a transistor radio that is faintly airing NPR's Weekend Edition program. My interest was piqued by a teaser for a segment promising to teach "How to Like Jazz." The teaser was spoken over the strains of Brubeck's "Take Five." I feel I am obliged to listen for professional reasons. I have to be able to trash it responsibly.)

Starting off with Charlie Parker's "Yardbird Suite." Talking about Bird improvising and how his sax sounds like a human voice speaking. So far, not offensive.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:55am
Doug Schulkind:

Now talking about how jazz is not just music your grandparents listened to. "Don't forget, jazz used to be America's popular music." Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" was on jukeboxes across the country.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:56am

NPR often uses Christian McBride, who generally does a good job, when I've heard him.
Anyway, I think any attention, done well or poorly, is good in the end.

For "now" music, Tomeka Reid is used as an example. "Listen to how all the musicians sound like they are talking to each other."

Dean:

Let me complain more generally about the multitude of "How to..." or "Why..." subtitles we see these days among non-fiction works aimed at a popular demographic who approach a subject with trepidation. I mean, Mortimer Adler probably thought he was being clever and coy ("ironic" we call it these days) when he titled his book How to Read a Book. (Indeed, it is ironic, inasmuch one must already know how to read Adler's book.) But other than fairly mundane, but difficult, subjects like, say, doing one's taxes or finding a job or an apartment or going on a diet, the How to... practice is cynical and cheap. There are exceptions. John Ciardi's How Does a Poem Mean is aptly clever, obviousy a response to Archibald Macleish.

@Dean, yes there are good "how to"'s, but your point is very well taken and I will probably quote you often in the weeks to come.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:02am
Doug Schulkind:

Tom Cole was the correspondent. (Apparently, NPR has been doing a series of segments covering different kinds of music.) When asked what should a person new to jazz listen to to get started, Cole listed five sources: (1) Dizzy Gillespie/Charlie Parker, (2) Thelonious Monk Quartets, (3) Art Ensemble of Chicago, (4) Booker Little, and (5) Shit, I forget the fifth one. It wasn't problematic, whatever it was.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:02am

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:12am
Doug Schulkind:

OK, the segment has been posted and I just re-listened to the ending. The fifth source for newbies to check out: Charles Mingus. Also, Tom Cole actually suggesting listening to both Booker Little AND Booker Ervin.

First big disappointment this year: I just saw that there will be a show with two projects this month, one featuring Ikue Mori, the other with Nate Wooley and Mary Halvorson. But I'm going to see Lucinda Childs that day...
  10:16am
Dean:

That gives me an idea, Brian in UK. I can search library catalogs for occurrences of "how to" in the titles, of which there are bazillions. I'm having a hard time finding occurrences other than at the beginning of the main title. Indeed, a lot of books whose titles begin, How to..., seem suitable to the title, e.g., How to Tell the Nationality of Old Violins, and How to Choose your Insurance Company, both from 1901. But a recent book illustrates my issue: Derek Leben's Ethical Robots: How to Design a Moral Algorithm, published last year. That's just glib.

Now, "How to Like Smooth Jazz," that I'd like to hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am

Of course, our nitpicking about NPR's "how to jazz" segment kind of plays right into the stereotype of intolerable people like us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am
Stanley:

fred, no Mouse Boys? Maybe my reverse listener request vibe is working. If so, I'll work on Joe McGasko next
  10:27am
Dean:

Plays into, yes, but "being critical of..." isn't the same as "not tolerating..."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:28am

I'm betting the NPR piece was produced beyond Tom Cole's reach. His speaking segments were likely edited in. He is a good and thoughtful person on the music. Has hosted a show on WPFW in Washington for more than 40 years. I used to listen to him when I was in high school.

Getting close to the end of the show, great stuff (showed great self control, only bought 1 CD)...thanks, Jeff!

I'm sure the TV people are salivating over this whole "driverless car" thing.

There is a relentlessness about todays show.

The next trend should be driverless bikes. Most bike riders are already texting anyway
  11:48am
rw:

Bike texting? I haven't really seen that around here. Sounds dangerous. I'm going to try it.

I have seen bikers using their phones. I once saw a driver texting while making a turn into Union County College, and smash into a barrier at the entrance (no injuries)
