As a remark, it was a complete non sequitur, and I blame Dr. Norm's infused cookies. The hippo song is on YouTube, it's from their first album, At The Drop of A Hat

went to a fabulous gay xmas party last night (it was labelled as such). It was the John Waters xmas party I always wanted (kitsch and all), and told the host such, and was impressed I was a huge fan of Waters. I noticed that outside NYC, the gay scenes in smaller cities are way much more insular. My bros (who were friends of the host), myself and a friend were the only straight lads there. It was the closest to feeling like I was at a NYC party I've been since I left NYC.

The national professional organization to which I belong has an annual conference which I attend every other year or so. Keynote addresses are predictably bland and stupid. But two years ago the keynote was John Waters, and he was worth the price of admission. The newly elected president of the organization won my vote when she announced that her hero is Iggy Pop. Here's hoping Iggy is the next keynote...

@Dean: I might need to change professions. Although, I went to an academic conference and they had a sessions on the geography of music in America, and got some good stories on the early flaming lips and woody Guthrie.

@Dave in St Albans: And we in the EU lose having you in. I may need to stockpile whisky before the tariffs kick in
  2:04pm
Dave in St Albans UK:

@fred I can only apologise for this outcome. If I was in charge I would legislate for Whisky on tap in every home.... Next to the cold water tap!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm

@Dave: Disappointment is on tap instead. French health care was supposed to get more open to "natural" medicine, and it turned out stuff like acupuncture and sophrology will get reimbursed some. But Guinness is still not recognized as a legitimate medicine

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Gaylord Fields was saying Jazz is like wine - but gets better as you get older. I noted I had an older sibling schooled me early on that African Americans had done most everything earlier & I should pay attention! This track reminds me there was Jazz in cartoons & movies too....20th Century jive...Stan Freberg's Three Little Pigs for example was a standout....

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:26pm

Honestly - not being informed ya unnerstan - associate the name with talk of the honky squares of Jazz. But love that track. Third Stream maybe ??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm
coelacanth∅:

hey thanks fred!
dumb me i would've found it if i'd followed the smell of reefer.
Avatar 2:29pm
Jeff Moore:

That fellow was a right bounder!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm
coelacanth∅:

WR eh...Kenton wasn't always great. but he IS great.
i think i liked him at first, when i was little; then decided he was too mainstream or something; then one day realised he was Great, regardless of how popular he was with a ("white") "mainstream" audience.
so it took a few years.
Avatar 2:33pm
Jeff Moore:

(the subject of And the Tears Flowed Like Wine, not Stan Kenton. I have no information pro or con about any potential bounderiness associated with Mr. Kenton)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm
coelacanth∅:

before i knew who Stan Kenton was i was heavily into Chuck Berry and a line in a song ("go go go"?) was "now they tell me Stan Kenton's cuttin' maybelline" which was to be taken as a dis - like shit they're ruining my song by playing it jazz style.
so i disliked him before i'd ever heard him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
coelacanth∅:

(but a few years later i heard him and liked him)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm

ohhh, i thought he promised *ovaltine*.
this is much better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
fred:

@coel: There was something called ovomaltine that I liked as a child (a few eons ago). Might be the same thing
Avatar 3:25pm
Wolfgang:

mmmmm, that's good ovaltine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
coelacanth∅:

i liked ovaltine as a child because it was sweet and we seldom had sweets in the house, but i tried it once when i was older and it's pretty weird! not chocolate; just vaguely chocolate-ish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
fred:

Thanks Stork, feel free to go on as long as you want, there's no show on this stream for a day or so
