Aloha, what's up in the ukebox Doug. And thanks for the swag WFMU tee!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Phillippe Bastille:

Pittsburgh! Please say you're not a Steelers fan! (Ravens season ticket holder here...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Sem:

Sonic Epiphanies in Real Life was in the running for the name of my first band in high school.

Hello, Doug, the Some, the Many, the Few, and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome welcome, Phillippe Bastille! dutchtheo! Sem! And everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Gina Bacon:

Morning, Doug and all!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

@Phillippe Bastille
I am not so much a "fan" of the Steelers as I am a fan of maximum drama and weirdness. Which the Steelers have delivered plenty of recently.

Good morning, Gina!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Doug Schulkind:

I hear the chimes! I hear the chimes!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:13am dutchtheo:

Ah, get well soon, i'm doing the shingle dance now, better then doing the shingles vaccin side effect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

I hope you mend soon, dutchtheo!
  9:15am bigplanetnoise:

It’s very chimey in here.... good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Fuzzy:

Hey, music -- all right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for chiming in, bigplanetnoise!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Phillippe Bastille:

@Doug Yeah, you've got that. I'm pretty laid back and like to have fun with the rivalry, but I know a lot of people who aren't. Sports are supposed to be fun, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

@Phillippe Bastille
I subscribe to the position that baseball isn't life or death. It's waaay more important than that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

Well howdy, Fuzzy! Allow me to scrunch-scrunch you under your chin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Phillippe Bastille:

Not in Baltimore...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am WR:

Hmmmm. Chimes. This Oliver tune which evolved from Lil Hardin's keyboard riff was the only one I easily recall. The chiming keyboard riff was Lil's signal to the boys in the band that break time was over. Chimes being related to bell or buzzer that was often used to signal time to workers and even like in school, the school bell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

@Phillippe Bastille
Maryland is my home state. I have rooted for the Orioles forever. Now I just root for whoever is playing the Yankees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

WR steps up with THE KNOWLEDGE! Thanks, mate!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am WR:

Even on radio broadcasts the hour would be signaled by a "chime" and some had a chime riff for the network/ station identification.
  9:24am Ramblin' Ray:

Greetings Doug and listeners.
  9:25am davefromtoronto:

what a set! morning doug et al...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Phillippe Bastille:

@Doug that's cool. Where you from? I grew up in Brooklyn Park, just outside Annapolis now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

I grew up outside of DC. Started out rooting for the Senators, but switched to the Orioles after the Senators deserted me (for a second time) in '72.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Gina Bacon:

This Henry Brown is nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am WR:

"Knowledge ", Haha! Speculation based on vaguely remembered comments and reading of liner notes. You are the one with the sounds which gathers us around like moths to the light.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey, Ramblin' Ray! Greetings, davefromtoronto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Phillippe Bastille:

Ah. You'll have to say Hey to sphere if he drops in. He grew up in Rockville, I think
Avatar 9:35am Listener Gregory:

Hi. Long-time listener, first-time chimer-in.
Avatar 9:37am Listener Gregory:

Sorry to hear about your injection maladies, Doug. I've had friends who've had the shingles, though, and it sounds well worth avoiding, even at some cost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Yeah, the doc finally convinced me to go for it this time around. In 6 months I go back for shot #2. Good times!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

As I play these tracks, I have to face the reality that I would likely never play them if they were singing in English.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Jeff Golick:

Today's GIF is everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
I am indeed rather proud of today's playlist image.
Avatar 9:45am Listener Gregory:

Doug, I think we have to assume that each artist is the "Bob Dylan of X," where X = home country.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

Doesn't he look Al Molinaro, the guy who played the cop on Happy Days?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Phillippe Bastille:

This Itsutsu No Akai Fusen is amazingly soothing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Jeff Golick:

He does!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am WR:

Yes Doug, these Japanese tracks are very mainstream. Cutesy late 60s pop. But good for me to practice my minimal language knowledge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am WR:

If you had the music videos for these tunes they are probably pretty campy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
What about the bands we would describe as being the X of X where X is the band X, and the other X = home country?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

As with many cheesy, campy Bollywood tracks, the production values are rather rich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Mari Henmi is 19 years old here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Webhamster Henry:

Tijuana Brass' Cultural Imperialism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Reach over there and grab me some jiàngyóu, davefromtoronto!
  10:03am davefromtoronto:

as soon as li bai gets his!
  10:03am Mark R.:

Not to be a vidiot, but Al Molinaro actually played a cop on "The Odd Couple," he took over the malt shop from Arnold (the Japanese actor whose name escapes me) on "Happy Days."
Avatar 10:06am Listener Gregory:

For Radio Algebra, there's a British band called "Add N to X," which I believe plays old synthesizers. Please add to setlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Gina Bacon:

Hahaha...thanks, Doug! Good Saturday tease!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am WR:

Bronwyn's show is great. New must listen show for me.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:09am dutchtheo:

Noriyuki "Pat" Morita was Matsuo "Arnold" Takahashi on Happy Days
Al Molinaro was Alfred "Al" Delvecchio the drive-in owner and cook of Arnold's Diner...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

@Mark R & dutchtheo
I L O V E to be corrected. Thanks for fixing my Al Molinaro knowledge.
Avatar 10:11am fleep:

The amazing depth and breadth of the collective knowledge greetings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

@Gina Bacon
Your sublime show needs no cheap teaser. It is appointment listening!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:11am dutchtheo:

But WHO is that uke player
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

@fleep
Around here, we just refer to it as the A.D.B.C.K.G.
Avatar 10:14am Listener Gregory:

This is new to me. Always exciting to hear a Dolphy I haven't heard before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

@dutchtheo
The ukelele player is Maso Rivera from Toa Alta, Puerto Rico. A musical virtuoso, Rivera wrote over 1,000 compositions for the Cuatro, Puerto Rico's national instrument. He was also a TV and radio star in his home country for half a century.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

Playing a "Dolphy they haven't heard before" is one way a DJ earns his stripes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am WR:

My reaction as well about the Dolphy and scratching my head that Looking Ahead doesn't seem to be on either of the Prestige collections I have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

And they called West Coast jazz "cool." This Curtis Counce group is EN FUEGO!
Avatar 🥁 10:21am βrian:

Oh, it's the jazz song. I like the jazz song.
Avatar 10:21am Listener Gregory:

@WR, I think Ken McIntyre is the leader, so those cuts might not have been available.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:21am doctorjazz:

Hi. But of a sound issue on a finetrack. Vinyl problem?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:23am dutchtheo:

Didn't know Maso Rivera. Read this about him: Puerto Rican Baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente presented him with one of his baseball bats. Upon Clemente's death in a plane crash in 1971, Rivera asked a local instruments luthier to assemble a cuatro out of that same bat, which he called "bate cuatro" (bat cuatro).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

Nope, doctorjazz. Something in the original recording. But it just doesn't matter. The music transcends the limitations of the lousy recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Doug Schulkind:

@dutchtheo
Wow, I did not know that! Clemente is about as revered a human being here in Pittsburgh as there is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Jeff Golick:

jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
  10:29am sinner:

May I make a request? Something in the key of Fm?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Horace Silver's playing is one of the most perfect things in nature.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

His playing is surpassed by is composing. Remarkable.
Avatar 🥁 10:31am βrian:

Doug, you got me hooked with Song for my Father.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

Classic 1950s voicing here with the frontline horns. SO GOOD!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
Or otherwise known as The Motherlode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

Or maybe Fatherlode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

@sinner
Your wish is my devout obligation!

I could quite possibly go to hell for the simple act of talking over Johnny Hodges.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:
