Michael 98145:

to quote: "Prior to the mass popularisation of recorded music in Portugal, Ercília Costa was widely known as the ‘Warbler of Fado’ for her mournful, sonorous vibrato.
Born in the Portuguese fishing parish of Costa de Caparica in 1902, Costa’s name became synonymous with Fado, a form of traditional music where melancholia and longing are often sung about, usually accompanied by Portuguese guitar. "

ngh i've heard Jimmie Scott before but today it struck me how much he sounded like Billie Holiday at times. a really beautiful voice and great singer. i can imagine the marketing for him being a bit challenging though...although according to Doug that's not why his career faltered

Oh wow... Beth Gibbons. One of the best things that ever happened to me in terms of live music is when a friend happened to have an extra ticket to see Portishead in 1994 at Bimbo's 365 in San Francisco, so she invited me along. Perfect venue for seeing them: like a lounge right out of Goodfellas, everyone at round cocktail tables with little lamps on them, table service, the works.
