yes it is a well-known place. have you been in old taksim babylon or new bomonti babylon? the new one is actually an old beer factory. and this big building is given to the " ministry of religion" now. and this religion forbits drinking alcoholic beverages :)

The 1st thing I was kind of put in mind of was Flower Traveling Band from Japan - but they're probly just some easy touchstone in my mind...
On the whole is the uniqueness of this that I find beguiling - a kind of Hard Rawk that didn't codify into Metal like most over here ...& the distinct approach to Rhythm & Melody from this region. What a treat !

Gary:

Cactus of NA, welcome to you and yours!
Avatar 8:49pm
LambdaCalculus:

All this talk about raki makes me wish I had some.
Avatar 8:49pm
sispus:

rakı has a special oil extraccted from anise (anason). the anise is added at the last distillation of the grape alcohol. for ouzo and other beverages, the extraxcts or oils added to the distilled alcohol, mean, they don't involve the distillation process. and anise has a very special flavour that you cannot use other aromas with it. anise is very very sharp.
Avatar 8:50pm
LambdaCalculus:

sispus, I drink anise... Spanish heritage so it's a natural for us. :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm

there was (is still, i think) a store in kenilworth nj that had maybe 40 different ouzos. i tried maybe 15-18. some of the more expensive ones were not sweet and the anise was very subtle.
-maybe that's more how raki is?

There's a pretty good Greek takeaway place down the road from me. No liquor license, natch.

LC -my gf at the time was 1/2 greek and her mother made the best! this store had the 2nd best!
the turkish place where i live now had it (except of course they called it "spinach pie") and that was the 3rd best (which makes it excellent); but their mother died a few months ago. she made it and they (the twins who own the restaurant) said they've never found anything comparable so they just took it off the menu.
sad.

coelacanth, I looked up the place and marked it on my map. It's not too far from Digital Press in Springfield, so next time I go by DP I can swing around and hit the store afterwards! :)

LambdaC it's very close to springfield. if you're in the mood that day too...if you like indian food my very favorite indian restaurant is a few blocks down! (i hope!) "star of india". you could have lunch there and have spanikopita for dinner!

name of this song is "haydar haydar". haydar is the name of an alevite legendary guy. the song is a "deyiş", a rekigious dance-song.

it is very hard to translate but a heartly word in turkish. sometime you must give compassion to the garip, he or she needs it, but cannot reach because it is "strange or poor" :)

müslüm gürses has a beautiful "covers" album named "aşk tesadüfleri sever". it has the covers of the songs like "mr tambourine man" or "temple of the king". the supervizor of the album is a gay turkish poet "muarthan mungan", and the turkish lyrics of the songs are poems of good turkish poets. the last note: müslüm gürses' regular followers are usually homophobic and sexist young turks, and they welcomed the album :)
