A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Live opera is fantastic, but opera on the radio is really for those who already know the opera and so don't need visuals, subtitles, etc. IMHO.
That doesn't mean that an occasional aria or chorus isn't very radio-worthy.

"Pure, uncut program" haha
  10:31am
ignatatus666:

Greetings Trouble
Please respect that these are anonymous programs
You just outed a famous person
Not cool
The 12 step program of A.A. is not Christian based
Each members concept of a God is personal. I’m 32 years sober and my God now as well as then is Good orderly Direction
Basically the group. The group together stay sober so that’s a power greater then me.
When the groups end meetings with the our father prayer it’s a total turn off and actually not a part of the program
I never take part in that prayer and never have
  10:35am
ignatatus666:

In A.A. and NA there are those that are addicted to the 12 step meetings. They just need to work on the 12th step and bring the message others . I personally think it’s a deeper rooted issue after a few years, yet we are no one to judge a person that is staying clean. We got high and drunk 24/7 so.....
I also personally never hid in meetings. I keep the program with me and reach out to those who are suffering.
  10:36am
Jeff formerly from Rahway:

Fascinating discussion! Gonna share this w/a friend who is in AA (and staying sober!)
  10:37am

pantz:

@melinda addiction is a disease that can't really be treated medically, except for total abstinence. The 12 Step program is more about rewiring yourself to deal with everyday life without abusing. Keep in mind, AA was established very early in the 20th Century, when your chices for addiction recovery were a sanitarium or death and religious groups were the only way to come together and talk about issues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am
Phillippe Bastille:

Been a while since I read it, but I think it was Annie Grace who discussed AA and its application to recovery in "This Naked Mind". She wasn't a fan, if memory serves me well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am

It's as religious as you want it to be. Most meetings I go to don't stress any one form of religion or beliefs.

my brother tried 3-4 (?) 12-step groups, all of which he had to stop going to because of the pressure and (unspoken) judgement on him for being critical of the religion pushed there. he found a "good one" finally but it was a 2.5 hour commute from where he lived, in brooklyn.

@ListenerGregory: Who are we talking about here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am
melinda:

@pantz I'm reading the Vox article now and it makes some of the same points you've made about why it works for some people (support, cognitive-behavioral group therapy), but it would be wrong for it to be the only option, which is why alternative groups have been started. Also, some people do better with naltrexone therapy. I read an article in my local weekly paper by someone who had been in and out of treatment, lived on the streets even, and finally got better with naltrexone. My point was that there need to be more options and it seems that AA has undue dominance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am
Phillippe Bastille:

The reddit thread r/stopdrinking is really supportive, but you have to steel yourself for the sheer number of tragic stories you see if you get on it every day. Helped me a lot at the start, but I can only get on it sporadically for that reason
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am
pantz:

I have no problem with alternatives to AA that would work for others. Heck, if soaking my head in vinegar every day keeps me from abusing, I would try it. To each their own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am
Phillippe Bastille:

@pantz absolutely!
  11:27am
ignatatus666:

Gregory the listener
That fine for herself to do. It’s just a reminder that others should never be mentioned by full name nor status. Our disease/addiction has no boundaries. If a well known person gets sober then decides not to be sober it gives the impression that a 12 step program didn’t work for them why would it work for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am
coelacanth∅:

sphere yes that's what my brother needed; along with a job that was more fulfilling. (but his depressive cycle derailed him from going after the more fulfilling job -etc...)
  11:30am

“It’s just a reminder that others should never be mentioned by full name nor status.” That is an utterly incredulous claim when a public figure decides to share information on their lives with others.

Go to the party ,grab a coffee cup start on one side of the room and greet everyone as you are making your way to the door ( depends how or if you do t feel comfortable)

@ignatatus666: Which of your first sentences that you are then contradicting by other sentences.

Anyway, there is no magic go the secret of AA or NA. The vast majority of people don’t rat on people in AA or NA. It’s — frankly — kind of a ninny/school marm attitude to “remind” people like this. Most people are respectful. Few I know who even hate people who are in AA would even gossip in spite.

This is all straw man nonsense on your part. You are assuming negative intent.

Ike - the Rastro Sunday flea mkt is of interest, mostly furniture. Food -best to eat the”menu” lunch. Much cheaper than dinner. Most cafes/bars give a free tapas with each drink/round... can range from olives to a wee paella... my favorite little restaurant is called Bar Amour - a real rest, despite the name. It was a former old man bar..need a reservation. If solo, can perhaps get a bar stool.
