This playlist is going to be a mile long from the group names alone...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m not really digging the choral vocals but like the instrumental arrangement.
Avatar 10:25pm
Erica:

The artist/group name is indeed a mouthful to pronounce.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Funky16Corners:

@Matt - The vocals make more sense as we go along. I'm pretty sure that isn't what Dylan had in mind when he wrote that song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm

I see dancers singing "Everybody must get stoned" on TV

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm

@Matt - Gabor Szabo
@Jeff - Thanks for the heads up, Fixed it
Avatar 10:35pm
Erica:

I was just wondering that too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Matt from New Orleans:

That was a stupid question as he was a guitarist and his name is in the long ass band name
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm
Funky16Corners:

This song pops up again in a different arrangement with a different title
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Funky16Corners:

Later in the show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

I remember Steve Allen would always have the groups that the kids liked on his show. I seem to remember Professor Irwin Corey and Jane Meadows looking startled as Blue Cheer made a god awful racket, but Steve just handled in his breezily sarcastic fashion. Then there was his commercial for Mocha Mix, where he banged out the jingle on the piano!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Funky16Corners:

I know he got very conservative/reactionary late in life, but Steve Allen was a funny guy, who kept even funnier company.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Little Danny:

Steve Allen seemed like a pretty hip cat for what he was in his time.

He also has a cool read of "Song For My Father" from a year or two earlier, which I feel like Larry has featured at some point on this show
Avatar 10:47pm
Erica:

The only song by Blue Cheer I've heard of is their version of "Summertime Blues", which didn't make as much sense as the original. Surprised Steve kept it cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Little Danny:

Ahhh "Flowers and Love"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Funky16Corners:

@Danny - I don't remember if I played that one, but I have played his versions of 'California Soul' and Son Of A Preacher Man, which he recorded for Flying Dutchman
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Franco Twinkie:

I read in Tosh Bermans memoir that him and his dad, Wallace Berman, the legendary beat artist sat next to Steve Allen and his wife Jane Meadows at the Santa Monica Civic the first time David Bowie played in Los Angeles. I wonder if he was wearing a suit?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Funky16Corners:

Feedback on a Steve Allen record!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Little Danny:

Szabo doesn't get the credit he deserves for being such a pioneer of feedback
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

I think if he hadn't died so young he'd be better respected today. he's one of my favorites
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - a suit and black dress socks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Franco Twinkie:

Oh man, Gabor Szabo played The Avalon Ballroom!
Avatar 10:53pm
Erica:

The narration in the beginning sounds sleepy compared to the Animals version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Funky16Corners:

I'd love to see a comprehensive list of jazz artists that Graham booked into his ballrooms
Avatar 10:53pm
Erica:

I meant this version is sleepy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Little Danny:

@Larry: I think Szabo's Now Sound crossovers also hurt his reputation with both the jazz crowd and the counterculture
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Franco Twinkie:

That's because Gabor had gone native....If you know what I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Funky16Corners:

@Danny - I think you're right. Which is a shame because I like those albums a lot
  10:56pm
Johnny Boy:

I really like this version. Go Gabor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I saw a concert at the Avalon when it briefly reopened as a concert venue last decade. I can’t remember who I saw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Funky16Corners:

@Johnny - Yeah, it really works well in this format
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Franco Twinkie:

Matt, so did Chresti and I! We saw The Mermen, a psychedelic surf power trio with a full on light show. It was the night before Easter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Little Danny:

That sounds awesome, Franco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Funky16Corners:

Back in the 80s there was a club night in NYC that was part of the garage/mod revival, called The Minds Eye. They has a full psychedelic light show, which our band was lucky enough to play in front of
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Franco Twinkie:

Was indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Funky16Corners:

@Johnny Boy - Did you play the Minds Eye with us?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

I always forget about your '80s garage band past, Larry. Any live footage anywhere on YouTube? Kinda shocking how much has turned up from that time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Little Danny:

Great set btw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Funky16Corners:

@Danny - I'm getting to the age where I may start forgetting about it. No live footage from the 80s but there is a clip on Youtube from a reunion at Asbury Lanes maybe ten years ago

For about a year a friend of ours lived a block from The Jefferson Airplane mansion on Fulton, across from the park.It was a great place! But unfortunately his downstairs neighbor was insane and possibly dismembered his mother there, so he moved.

As far as I can tell this is Scott's first album as a leader (maybe his first overall). Very different that what he would do with the LA Express and Joni Mitchell.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm

Scott sounds much funkier than everyone else in the band on this Aretha cover, but I guess that's the point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Funky16Corners:

There's a great transitional phase in vocal arranging in the mid 60s, from Ray Conniff type stuff to things like this and many of Curt Boettcher's arrangements. Even Anita Kerr got hip.
