Brian in UK:

Sem, REALLY. He is not as other men.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm
Stanley:

Hi Bill. What a nice surprise.
Your question to Brian reminded me of this:
it's 1976 and we're back after the hols for the last year at Grammar School and there's this kid in our class causing a storm in morning assembly.
Never forget his name - Chris Jezitis. There he was - skinny trousers, bootlace tie, ripped jacket, Doc Marten boots and spikey hair, surrounded by a sea of drab long haired boys and all eyes are on him.
The fucker had spent the summer stuffing records into sleeves at Stiff in Soho, London.
He could be your Gravitar.
Avatar 12:41pm
Bill Mac:

Interesting tie in there... I'm glad someone has a possible tie in to the Larry. According to the Wiki he's tied into a number of very interesting characters from that time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Stanley:

Many of the early acts on Stiff weren't 'punk' at all - Larry Wallis, Nick Lowe, Wreckless Eric, Costello, Dave Edmunds, to name but a few. Things changed when The Damned were signed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
Franco Twinkie:

Raymond Pettibon is such an odd and funny guy, I would see him at some event looking like he ran all the way from home - sweaty and disheveled with a bottle of water stuffed in his front pocket. A compelling artist as well as a true contrarian.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
Jeff Golick:

The jokes are old but also manure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
coelacanth∅:

Stanley all those stiff records artists were marketed as punk over here right from the start.
it was punk just because of the image they copped, or that was projected onto them. even squeeze was called punk rock at first! and Joe Jackson. and Graham Parker.
it sounded different to me at the time too, i guess because it wasn't as highly polished as what we'd gotten used to by the mid-70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
Sem:

They're not mulch but it's all we have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
coelacanth∅:

yes more gardening puns! of course some aren't great but we can weed those out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
Stanley:

That's the thing, coelacanth∅, I see punk more as a time rather than a music. The overturning of the old music order.

that's a good way to put it Stanley.

Avatar 1:32pm
Bill Mac:

See you Looms don't be a stranger!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Brian in UK:

Sem, I did prune but due to the way they were chasing the light from the overhanging trees it was not radical. Funny, the Bramley apple was prolific last year, minimal this year.

Stampfel explained the origin of the name:

We kept changing the name. First it was the Total Quintessence Stomach Pumpers. Then the Temporal Worth High Steppers. Then The Motherfucker Creek Babyrapers. That was just a joke name. He was Rinky-Dink Steve the Tin Horn and I was Fast Lightning Cumquat. He was Teddy Boy Forever and I was Wild Blue Yonder. It kept changing names. Then it was the Total Modal Rounders. Then when we were stoned on pot and someone else, Steve Close maybe, said Holy Modal Rounders by mistake. We kept putting out different names and wait until someone starts calling us that then. When we got to Holy Modal Rounders, everyone decided by accumulation [sic] that we were the Holy Modal Rounders. That's the practical way to get named.
