I was about to reference the great Halifax explosion (a cargo ship hit an ship w/ a cargo of war ordinances) of WWI that destroyed all of the windows (and many buildings [largest explosion pre-atom bomb]) of Halifax, but it was in the song....

CC:

Hi Gina, and all... I was just thinking how that first song reminded me of John Prine and either Iris DeMent or Margo Price...nice!!!

I adore Prine's In Spite of Ourselves, an LP full of duets. His songs with Iris Dement make me melt.

Darrin, you're original, singular. Absolutely love your lyrics, attitude toward things. Great music / art.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
Franco Twinkie:

Go with me on this one, Darrin. Walmart is Americana. For better or worse. I always take my camera, been doing it for a while. I especially like taking pictures of food in all the wrong places: Vanilla ice cream in the diapers, carrots on top of light bulbs, ect, ect, Plus, the lighting is fantastic!
  5:34pm
CC:

that song kind of reminded me of a cross between what Bruce Springsteen and Bobby Bare Jr might compose together?
Avatar 5:39pm
geezerette:

I'm an artist. Probably disqualifies me. :D
Avatar 5:42pm

Painter, mainly. It's the same as music but you use your eyes mostly.
Avatar 5:43pm
geezerette:

Heya Franco!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
Franco Twinkie:

Copy that, Darrin! Okay, the latest Did He Really Say That Moment: San Francisco is breaking federal environmental laws by letting the homeless put their garbage in the ocean. He said it!?!
  5:45pm
CC:

Poetry in motion..!.. beautiful structure and rhythm to those lyrics!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm
Franco Twinkie:

Geeze! Where you been?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm
Doug Schulkind:

Raised my daughter on Shel Silverstein books. So perfectly twisted.
Avatar 5:46pm
geezerette:

Your songs are like cartoons! Political cartoons, great ones.
Avatar 5:51pm

@Doug: I raised mee young self on Silverstein as well,,,,(still have them at my parent's, won't let them give them away).
Avatar 5:52pm

11/26, good fraction! (math dorking o'er here)
Avatar 5:54pm

George Herriman: Krazy Kat, up there with Silverstein though completely different. Two of my favorites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm

My favorite moment of Americana from the way back: Driving across the res in New Mexico in a thunder storm listing to a Navajo radio station and the only words in English were Ford Truck.

I wasn't going to get started on cartoonists, but what the heck: Justin Green, widely recognized as the inventor of the graphic novel with his absurdly auto-biographical comic Binky Brown Meets The Holy Virgin Mary.
Avatar 6:13pm
geezerette:

Whoa! That sounds incredible!

Will Eisner is also credited for inventing the graphic novel.

Spiegelman is a god!

Crumb's Genesis is hair raisingly brilliant. It'll flatten you! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm
Franco Twinkie:

Early Spiegelman is very revealing. His collection Breakdowns charts his herky-jerky development to his current statis as a true master.

I was always into music but until I got to New Jersey I never heard groups like HP Lovecraft on the radio or J Geils... such a difference between the West and the East Coast back then...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm
Gina Bacon:

I'm glad you like it...they made some great music together, for former semi-rivals! And that may be putting it strongly. They eyed each other up and down, more likely.
Avatar 6:40pm
northguineahills:

@Franco: My favorite Americana moment when I was on a quest to meet Howard Finster (outsider/folk artist who designed early Talking Heads/REM artists) in the late 90s. We saw SY and Stereolab in Atlanta, but my friends in Athens were MIA, so my friend and I slept in a subdivision under construction in his car. A trooper, tapped on the window around 2am, and told us to leave Athens and never come back (He thought we were lovers or something). So we drove a three hours or so on the back roads in the mountains towards Finster's Paradise Garden. Found a park off a dirt road and took a nap in the grass at 5 am, at 7:30, woke up, found a really rural Baptist church, and dressed in our polyester threads, went to church, and then spent the rest of the day w/ Howard Finster. He died two years later.
