	♥ 4:13pm Rich in Washington: I mean they were built in the 40s. Really tiny. Even the cockroaches were hunchbacked. My dad helped us move in and he looked around and he said 'I think we lived here briefly in 1958'.

	4:15pm Linda Lee: yes. daddy's got the gun. 'marry her or else.' i think lots of small apartments were created after the war to help house returning vets. there was a housing shortage in the new york for sure.

	♥ 4:17pm Jan Turkenburg: I was talking about weddings I was obliged to attend as a kid and a teen in FDL :-) The weddings you reffer to we call "moetjes" (musties)
	♥ 4:17pm DJ GeorgyGirl: Same in the UK ... the Luftwaffe flattened quite a few housing estates! Did the US have pre-fab housing after the war, too?

	4:18pm Linda Lee: oh yes. that's when prefab developed big time.
	♥ 4:20pm DJ GeorgyGirl: My paternal grandfather had a bomb shelter in his back garden. Fascinated me. I mean it was basically an underground brick structure, but he kept his wine in it. lol.
	4:20pm Linda Lee: there were kit houses before that, especially from Sears, for beginning families to afford, but the market really matured for the vets ~ & of course the GI bill enabled their return too.
	4:20pm Linda Lee: that's fabulous! a consistent temperature for the wine.
	♥ 4:21pm Rich in Washington: I do know that where I grew up, there were massive shipyards during WW2. My town was famous for its intense production of 'liberty ships', meant to run supplies through German U-Boat blockades and into allied countries. There was a huge boom of housing construction in formerly rural areas. Some of the houses still stand. After the war here, there was suddenly a glut of houses, as most of the ship building labor moved on to more prosperous areas.

	♥ 4:26pm Rich in Washington: In Vancouver WA? No. Not at all. I'm not sure what the transition consisted of, but I believe ship building ceased entirely. Then there was the whole Vanport flood tragedy in Portland across the river. A whole town built originally for WW2 shipbuilders, and in postwar years largely populated by African Americans, was completely washed away. It's only recently being talked about.

	4:34pm Linda Lee: that's the real revolution the Beatles brought on in the states ~ and they played their own instruments. think of the shift between the folk revival & Woodstock. that was just a few years too.

	4:48pm Linda Lee: there's an interview with Anita Pallenberg about the film 'performance' (filmed in 69) & how it reflected the sense of doom at the end of the decade when it all came down. i think 'gimme shelter' does too.

	♥ 5:02pm DJ GeorgyGirl: I think you're pretty much right there, Linda. After Brian Jones died ... certainly something essential left them, I think.
	5:05pm Linda Lee: yes!! even if Brian wasn't doing well personally, he continued contributing amazing vitality to the band. Mick & Kieth just seemed to lose patience ~ at least on the surface. that Keith was allowd to fuck himself up from top to bottom while Brian had to be released on the basis of drug use, shows a basic truth about the band.
	5:06pm Linda Lee: & yes, they did lose something essential. probably the heart..
	♥ 5:06pm DJ GeorgyGirl: I think there was a certain amount of soul selling, definietly. There's a poitn that Marianne Faithfull makes in her autobiography about Mick emerging from that period (jail, Performance, Altamont, Brian, etc) in a "bulletproof and shiny Mick Jagger suit, which was impenetrable"

	5:09pm Linda Lee: she couldn't withstand the shift, as Mick's partner & so, yes, her own demons were fed. Anita did withstand the shift (and her demons) more successfully, though probably mainly on the basis of having offered Keith children.

	5:11pm Linda Lee: Anita also took Mick as a lover during the filming.. i'm guessing that helped turn him around as well. Anita was a powerful woman, potentially quite destructive.

	5:17pm Linda Lee: read a book called 'how i became hettie jones'? about the white wife of leroi jones (later amiri baraka) & how the personal changes he underwent over time had to separate them. the beginning of their relationship in post-war new york is so beautifully described. the period seems really lovely.

	5:19pm Linda Lee: there's also a beautiful book out there called 'for love of ray', by bonnie bremser, wife of poet ray bremser. wasn't this from 'odessa'? i still remember my uncle's red velvet copy :-)

	5:21pm Linda Lee: a great friend of mine arrived in new york from texas just after the war & i have first hand accounts that tell me it really was all that. she had an absolute ball.

	♥ 4:13pm Rich in Washington: I mean they were built in the 40s. Really tiny. Even the cockroaches were hunchbacked. My dad helped us move in and he looked around and he said 'I think we lived here briefly in 1958'.

	4:15pm Linda Lee: yes. daddy's got the gun. 'marry her or else.' i think lots of small apartments were created after the war to help house returning vets. there was a housing shortage in the new york for sure.

	♥ 4:17pm Jan Turkenburg: I was talking about weddings I was obliged to attend as a kid and a teen in FDL :-) The weddings you reffer to we call "moetjes" (musties)
	♥ 4:17pm DJ GeorgyGirl: Same in the UK ... the Luftwaffe flattened quite a few housing estates! Did the US have pre-fab housing after the war, too?

	4:18pm Linda Lee: oh yes. that's when prefab developed big time.
	♥ 4:20pm DJ GeorgyGirl: My paternal grandfather had a bomb shelter in his back garden. Fascinated me. I mean it was basically an underground brick structure, but he kept his wine in it. lol.
	4:20pm Linda Lee: there were kit houses before that, especially from Sears, for beginning families to afford, but the market really matured for the vets ~ & of course the GI bill enabled their return too.
	4:20pm Linda Lee: that's fabulous! a consistent temperature for the wine.
	♥ 4:21pm Rich in Washington: I do know that where I grew up, there were massive shipyards during WW2. My town was famous for its intense production of 'liberty ships', meant to run supplies through German U-Boat blockades and into allied countries. There was a huge boom of housing construction in formerly rural areas. Some of the houses still stand. After the war here, there was suddenly a glut of houses, as most of the ship building labor moved on to more prosperous areas.

	♥ 4:26pm Rich in Washington: In Vancouver WA? No. Not at all. I'm not sure what the transition consisted of, but I believe ship building ceased entirely. Then there was the whole Vanport flood tragedy in Portland across the river. A whole town built originally for WW2 shipbuilders, and in postwar years largely populated by African Americans, was completely washed away. It's only recently being talked about.

	4:33pm Linda Lee: me too. thank you. was just thinking of Mr. Dylan. when did he go electric & cause that uproar? was it '66? it's easy to forget about it now, but the shift to electric instruments in popular music as the norm was phenomenal.
	♥ 4:34pm DJ GeorgyGirl: I should know the answer to that ... I had the CD up for grabs during the pledge in March! lol I think it was 66 ... just before his motorcycle accident. I may be wrong. Might be 65?
	4:34pm Linda Lee: that's the real revolution the Beatles brought on in the states ~ and they played their own instruments. think of the shift between the folk revival & Woodstock. that was just a few years too.
	4:35pm Linda Lee: things did happen incredibly fast in those 10 years. you're right!

	4:48pm Linda Lee: there's an interview with Anita Pallenberg about the film 'performance' (filmed in 69) & how it reflected the sense of doom at the end of the decade when it all came down. i think 'gimme shelter' does too.

	♥ 5:02pm DJ GeorgyGirl: I think you're pretty much right there, Linda. After Brian Jones died ... certainly something essential left them, I think.
	5:05pm Linda Lee: yes!! even if Brian wasn't doing well personally, he continued contributing amazing vitality to the band. Mick & Kieth just seemed to lose patience ~ at least on the surface. that Keith was allowd to fuck himself up from top to bottom while Brian had to be released on the basis of drug use, shows a basic truth about the band.

There's a poitn that Marianne Faithfull makes in her autobiography about Mick emerging from that period (jail, Performance, Altamont, Brian, etc) in a "bulletproof and shiny Mick Jagger suit, which was impenetrable"

	5:09pm Linda Lee: she couldn't withstand the shift, as Mick's partner & so, yes, her own demons were fed. Anita did withstand the shift (and her demons) more successfully, though probably mainly on the basis of having offered Keith children.

	5:11pm Linda Lee: Anita also took Mick as a lover during the filming.. i'm guessing that helped turn him around as well. Anita was a powerful woman, potentially quite destructive.

	5:17pm Linda Lee: read a book called 'how i became hettie jones'? about the white wife of leroi jones (later amiri baraka) & how the personal changes he underwent over time had to separate them. the beginning of their relationship in post-war new york is so beautifully described. the period seems really lovely.

	5:19pm Linda Lee: there's also a beautiful book out there called 'for love of ray', by bonnie bremser, wife of poet ray bremser. wasn't this from 'odessa'? i still remember my uncle's red velvet copy :-)

	5:21pm Linda Lee: a great friend of mine arrived in new york from texas just after the war & i have first hand accounts that tell me it really was all that. she had an absolute ball.
