Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

It's not that I dismiss Peterson as a technical wizard with little soul. I adore Art Tatum, and many people would attach that description (absurdly, in my opinion) to him. I guess I can never escape the feeling that Peterson is trying to impress me. It gets in the way of his actually impressing me. That said, he is indisputably impressive. I just never seek out his music. There are 100 pianists whose records I would reach for ahead of his.

But that's just me.
