This interview is fascinating so far because it is only recently that Bugliosi's theories for prosecution have been thoroughly analyzed. Understandably, of course, because he got said conviction and most folks wanted it over and done with in the '70s.

When Mike Love came out of the shower, Manson and Susan Atkins (aka Sadie Mae Glutz) confronte3d him angrily and told him that he was NOT ALLOWED to leave the group.

  11:23am prudy:

yes, armies enlist people all the time and get them to kill others they have no connection to. You could call that mass psychopathy.
  11:25am JakeGould:

@prudy: Not everyone in the military is a psychopath. Army troops are just tons of people and some have no choice from an economic standpoint. But elite forces that sign up specifically to be a Marine or a Navy SEAL? Yup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am coelacanth∅:

many cops as well. when a cop shoots someone in the back as he's running away, or when they gang up, as they do every hour of every day, to kick the shit out of someone who's already lying helpless on the ground... same mentality.

  11:28am Sam:

I don't think you had to be a psycho in Britain in the 40's to fight the Nazis - you just didn't want your house to be bombed and your grandma to be shot. But to kill children in Vietnam to stop communism from spreading, yeah, that's pretty psycho.
  11:28am prudy:

the CIA is basically the government's corp of psychopaths...

  11:32am prudy:

don't think Trump is clever enough to be in the CIA...but i agree with your point.
  11:33am JakeGould:

@Prudy: Most veterans of wars—such as what Sam mentions with World War II and Britain—don’t glorify war when they got back to civilian life. Most just moved on and many suffered from PTSD which is the normal reaction to being immersed in violence like that.

When I see a veteran who is homeless and offed up I see someone who deserves pity and sympathy. They did what they had to do because—in many cases—they had no choice. Now they are spcial detritus.
  11:34am prudy:

this CIA intersection with the Manson family is pretty interesting...
  11:34am prudy:

J Gould: agreed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am coelacanth∅:

Sam absolutely true, but not true (as a generalization) in vietnam. probably the majority of vietnam soldiers were afraid to not do what they were told. then there was the social & family pressure.
...i would've been stronger and protested and probably go to prison; or maybe flee the country. but most people (though not nearly as much as now) are basically compliant puppets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Some accuse people like Leary with being complicit with the CIA.
Now this is interesting - because I always maintained that Manson was not the Hippies' - but older - & a product instead of the Establishment & the Institutions where he'd been incarcerated most of his life...

Ken: your assessment of Tom O'Neill: do you think him as sceptical of his newer hypotheses as he is of those of older? Not being so is a common malady of those with alternative explanations for things, e.g. those who rejected childhood religion but then were utterly credulous of gurus or of comissars. Thanks.
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 11:53am Rich in Washington:

The last one I really liked was Taming the Beast, by Dery Matera, based on interviews with Ed Mann, who was for all practical purposes Manson's psychological worker while in prison. It sort of deflates some of the mythology regarding Chuck's woo-woo mind control powers

Yes. The Family is the best in my opinion, and not just because it's written by a Fug.
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 11:55am Rich in Washington:

I like that Sanders peppers the book with a textual theremin sound every time something spooky comes up. He's a poet, after all.
Avatar 🚽 Swag For Life Member 11:55am -Ken:

@Murakami - I dont quite get your question, but what O'Neill does in the book is shred the official history of the murder motive. He never does put forward a definitive alt thesis, in the book at least.

Most soldiers are not psychopaths. Psychopathy like all mental illness, is an exaggeration of traits that have proven useful prehistorically—in this case the ability to kill others not in the kin-group without mercy, which evidence from other primates indicates is part of the basic primate model.

Great interview Ken. In October 1969, I went to Las Angeles with my Grandmother to visit her sister. I was ten.I do recall the fear in the city as this was still fresh. Apparently, the aunt I visited was a seamstress that worked occasionally at the Spahn movie ranch. I can confirm the dates because on the plane ride home, Led Zepplin was about 4 rows ahead of us riding coach traveling to the only show they played in Kansas City. I stood next to them at the baggage claim. My grandmother was afraid of them because of the long hair.

For whatever it's worth... The Looney Tunes connection is true. In 1946, the short 'Book Revue' was released, directed by Bob Clampett. It features many musical and literary references, as you might imagine. Ever topical, there is one small bit where Daffy parodies the popular song, in an attempt to warn Little Red Riding Hood who is headed into the jaws of the wolf. It isn't explicitly mentioned in the Wiki articles for 'Book Revue', OR for Quartetto Cetra but if you listen...Crapa Pelada is clearly the inspiration. Thank you for digging this out of my memory banks. Book Revue is one of my Clampett favorites! Here's a link for a clip from the cartoon where the song is referenced at 0:45.

Wiki: en.m.wikipedia.org...

P. S. Oddly enough, this version of zoot suit Daffy has once again become relevant as an internet meme due to his resemblence to a character in a popular anime.
