Curiously, Chuck's brother Gap, was close with Lou's cousin, Randy. Randy would bring Gap around to Velvets rehearsals, to the point where one day Lou asked Gap if he wanted to sit in with the band and "maybe jam something." It was never recorded, but it should have been. Gap hooked up his mini-Wurlitzer 66-key electric piano and added just the right amount of flair and pizazz to what might have been an otherwise dull run-through of White Light/White Heat. Immedately, Gap was asked to join the Velvet's, but demurred saying they really weren't "his scene, man." Gap did refer the band to his brother Chuck, who Gap felt would be happy to join the Velvet's in lieu of Lou's want of a Mangione and Gap's unavailability. "It's the Mangione "thing" you're looking for," Gap told Lou. "All Magione's have it. Chuck maybe more than me."
And so it was that Chuck Mangione sat-in with The Velvet Underground. He even offered to show them a song he'd just written. A song called "Feels So Good." After playing the demo for Moe Tucker and Lou, Lou remarked that it was kind of catchy, but that he didn't hear a hit.
As a dejected Chuck Mangione went home to Rochester, he accidentally left behind his most prized possession. His custom-made Gemeinhardt Eb fleugelhorn with the dual-springed spit valves.

Presently, Ray Manzarek of The Doors pops in to say hello, stating that he was looking for his mini-Wurlitzer that "on of those Mangione's" had borrowed from him. Ray was really steamed and as he ranted, according to those that werew there, little specks of spittle were fluying from his lips. All the while, Lou just keeps blatting, ignoring the whole thing, until he stops for a minute, loweres the fleugelhorn, and he speaks.
"Tell the Mangione's they get the fleugelhorn when you get the Wurlitzer."
With that established, Lou had Ray call The Doors in and a jam ensued that lasted for several days, no doubt aided by whatever recreational things were available and "in" at that time. Though nothing was recorded, it was certainly a worthy experiment, if one that didn't bear bankable fruit. "I'm sorry Lou, but the fellas have decided you're out." Lou reportedly laughed, saying "I didn't realize I was ever "in!"
What did pan out, at least artistically, was MANZARONI, the band formed shortly thereafter with Ray Manzarek, Chuck and Gap Mangione, Ribs Gadd (Steve's brother) and Donna Fargo Their limited-edition 11" (Buckling Mezzanine) is impossible to find. The whole project had the fortuitous backing of Rice-A-Roni, which made the financial loss bearable ane the critical love all the sweeter.
Thanks for letting me ramble, Scott. Love your show. One old trombonist, signing out.
