Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:14am Brian in UK:

Hello Doug and funsters and you ausmanx. Just got in and heard the score. Pathetic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Sem:

Hello, Stanley! Greets, BiUK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

Brian in UK, over on this side of the drink when we hear silence, we say "crickets." Go ahead an make some noise!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:17am Brian in UK:

Hey Sem. Sad week, do you remember the grey and white cat, Jackson? Well, Lili found him outside the house by the road on Monday morning, must have happened in the night as rigor mortis was well set in.
  9:17am Listener Gregory:

Your comment about "crickets" points out what John Cage observed: We never actually experience silence.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:18am Brian in UK:

@LG most people are too scared to listen to silence.
Avatar 9:18am ausmanx:

we rely on you for noise, doug! two pretty awful batting teams, brian, sadly... and so sad to hear about Jackson
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

The Sounds of Silence is an ode by our foremost poet Simon Garfunkel.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:20am Brian in UK:

Thanks ausmanx, it is a feeble way to go.

How was the trip to South Aus, if memory serves?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Sem:

We invest so much emotion in our pets; I can identify w/ that trauma, Brian.
  9:22am Listener Gregory:

If you somehow got away from all sounds, you would then hear your own nervous system... or so Cage said.
If only you would hear Count Basie instead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Gina Bacon:

I find silence to be deafening, mostly.
  9:24am Listener Gregory:

The quieter it gets, the more I realize how much my ears are ringing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

True for so many of us, Gina. Those of us who can't stand the absence of sound so much we foist it on others.
  9:25am Listener Gregory:

@Doug: Ah, so that explains your title, Foister-in-Chief.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:25am Brian in UK:

@ausmanx, it is strange that this year the bowlers are fighting back, as you know cricket is made for batsmen. A bowler would never invent T20 cricket.
Trouble is now that they are getting the batsmen out cheaply, they have to bowl with less rest between innings.
  9:27am JoeBlow:

I'm listening to crickets now... or are they frogs? and the drummer stream! good mornin
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:35am Brian in UK:

Doug, now that the comments boards are in full swing on this nutty station, have they made an impact on your role as a DJ and to what effect?
(less than 1000 words by next Friday!!!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for blowing in, JoeBlow!
  9:38am Boy Bunny:

Great to catch you live this morning. Usually have to make due with the archive.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38am Brian in UK:

ausmanx, Ingerland fight back, the little s..t Warner is out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
The immediacy and intimacy of the interaction during the show is nothing short of thrilling for me. It is a vital part of the experience. I have to always remind myself that the percentage of listeners who participate in the commenting is just a fraction of the overall audience. But I consider this a crucial element to the proceedings.
Avatar 9:41am ausmanx:

western NSW last trip, brian, and out there again next week (after Oren Ambarchi plays in my house - huge numbers for that one!). drought out there is terrible and no sign of breaking. might do remote South Aust in October (nuclear test sites!). you been away this summer?

Boy Bunny, welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

The first and best version of La Sitiera I ever heard was by Celia Cruz, though this take from Senegalese crooner Laba Sosseh is pretty killer.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:48am Brian in UK:

ausmanx No holidays just quick breaks to see friends fleetingly.

Doug, this crazy station and the comments board has meant meeting other listeners from around the world. Quite wonderful.

Talking of which, where is the Dutchman and the Finn?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
A thoroughly wonderful byproduct. To call this fluid, amorphous gathering "a community" is not so much bluster. I believe it and live it.

(unless I missed something)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am listener Rey:

Quilinchini is a name, Doug. According to the song, the Quilinchini's party was a big waste of time (no sirvio pa' na) as the authorities cut it short when somebody lit up one of them skinny cigarettes

@burke: I always thought the term 'World Music' was invented by record stores to stack foreign stuff in the racks and now, some 30 years on I don't hear people using the term. Well I don't, anyway.
It's off-world music I want to hear.
  10:20am Listener Gregory:

It is good to know D I V O R C E in every language.
  10:21am Gina B:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:21am Brian in UK:

Hello mauri, apologies if I have asked before but have you started at Tampere?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Doug Schulkind:

@Gina B
I have way too much of this stuff. Just letting off a little steam.
Avatar 10:22am burke:

@Stanley I'll drink to that
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:22am Brian in UK:

@Stanley, I think it was a bunch of music journalists that made up the preposterous name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Sem:

For the relentlessly curious abut our pal mauri:
"Tampere is dubbed the "Manchester of Finland" for its industrial past as the former center of Finnish industry, and this has given rise to its Finnish nickname "Manse" and terms such as "Manserock."

From the Interwebs...

"This plant can kill you or be a part of a killer salad — so handle it with care. ... Pokeweed, also called poke or pokeberry (Phytolacca americana), is a native herbaceous plant found throughout most of the U.S., in fields and weedy areas and along forest edges and roadsides."

AS a rabid fan of Silent Cinema, i can also confirm that that is Clara Bow, however i am not quite at the level of telling you which film that gif is from, as i haven't seen it. Looks FUN!!!

always love the way traditional medicinals are primarily poisonous & can kill you ~ but here, have some Oxy! enjoy!
when i lived down in north carolina the poke berries' juice staved off years of cold & flu. no other medicine necessary. so there, Big Pharma!
  10:51am Jeff g.:

Ah thanks, @Linda Lee! A poisonous plant seems an odd choice for salad, but then I was never the risky sort...

you do have to know what you're doing with herbs, but honestly, in general the plants are *so much safer* than what's synthesized & sold routinely without any warning, it's absurd!

Here's Lee Konitz from 1968. He played at the opening of the club Birdland, with Charlie Parker on the same bill. And then I heard him earlier this year—still strong. What an amazing life.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Franco Twinkie:

Linda, I grew up eating Perslane, Vedolaga we called it. It's just a weed really. It's particularly good with freshly made beans. Back in the day, it was uncommon and hard to find, but we had a patch in the backyard. My mom would say to us"Don't tell the other kids we eat weeds". How things have changed! now you can find it everywhere. Last Sunday while gathering up a clump at the farmers market I found myself giving an impromtu tutorial to several Chines women who wanted to know what the hell to with it.
