what LL just said. yes.
Avatar 🦇 12:08pm
Julie:

there is so much more than that!
Avatar 12:09pm
Linda Lee:

there is! the hits were overplayed when they were new & they're still overplayed. liable to turn someone off altogether & that's a shame.

Linda Lee:

hi Phillippe!
Avatar 🦇 12:12pm

I've played the hits too but I'm slowly working my way through all the lesser known stuff.

Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Hello, Julie and WFMU kin! As a lifelong Queen fan, i totally appreciate this program's airing of the lesser heard tracks. I just wish i could make it here on time to HEAR the Queen songs more often!
Avatar 🦇 12:14pm
Julie:

Sorry, Granny! This one was 6 minutes long, probably the longest so far.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:17pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Yeah there's not many longer than that, other than the dreaded Boho Rhap! Maybe something on "Live Killers"? I'm such a Queen geek i can tell you which member wrote which song, but not such a Queen geek that i can tell you anything much past "Flash Gordon."
Avatar 12:18pm
Roberto:

Julieta!
Avatar 🦇 12:18pm

actually Bo Rhap doesn't QUITE make 6 minutes, it's like 5:55 or something.

Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

"March of the Black Queen" is one of may favorites —and one of the longest, according to a geeky Queen fan site. "The Prophet's Song" seems to be the longest, with Boho coming in at a measly #7.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
listener james from westwood:

Can't see that name without hearing Linda Hunt rasp "I am the Shadout Mapes" from Lynch's Dune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Michael 98145:

I really should re-read Dune one of these days
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:24pm

It's rewarding. New things reveal themselves given time.
Avatar 🦇 12:24pm
Julie:

I've never seen it
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

I never read nor saw "Dune." I DID see most of the doc about Jodorowsky's Dune, and that was really exciting!

ooh, gotta check out the 1969 show in the archives.

Your pronunciation was correct! And Sting is in it. The film is ... a lot to process.

I think it's a glorious baroque mess with too much talent to completely ignore, but I know Lynch disavowed it and excluded it from his remastered works on DVD.

"Dune" totally flopped when it came out, however, as with so many initial flops, it is getting a lot more appreciation these days. "Blade Runner" was a flop, and today the glorious Final Cut will be screened at SF's finest film palace.
Avatar 🦇 12:36pm
Julie:

I feel like they came out close to the same time so I always mix them up. Blade Runner I HAVE seen though not as much as I should considering my love for Rutger (RIP)

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
listener james from westwood:

I remember at the Dune opening, they were handing out a one-page glossary sheet to explain the in-universe terms. How they thought we'd be able to read these in the dark I dunno. Felt like the act of a nervous marketing department. I hadn't read the book before seeing it and my mid-teen self had no problem following the dialogue/lingo.
Avatar 1:05pm
Linda Lee:

no, John Foxx was *not* a big deal in 1980. :-)

Julie, have you ever heard the German prog band Frumpy? active 1970 - 71. amazing vocalist: Inga Rumpf. if you like this stuff here, you'll like Frumpy. look them up, along with Fanny. :-)
Avatar 1:16pm
Linda Lee:

the era was so incredibly fruitful, internationally, it's pretty unbelievable.
Avatar 🦇 1:16pm

oooh no, thank you. after last week I felt like I need more female led bands from that era, so thanks!
Avatar 1:17pm

Hello Julie and Dark-Nighters. I fondly remember listening to this amazing show live on WPLJ back then. Never doubted Sir Elton greatness after this!
Avatar 1:21pm

best to look for both bands on youtube. there's a lot of material there, especially from a british tv show, i think it was, called 'beat club'.

Avatar 🦇 1:23pm

i was just thinking of Renaissance! a friend in high school '74 -'75 listened to nothing else. :-)
Avatar 🦇 1:28pm

I heard Allison Steele play them late one night on K-Rock and I was hooked. Early 90s I guess that was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm

Oops...I guess WABC-FM hadn't changed it's call letters to "Whiite Port Lemon Juice" yet. Same station though. Tenks for the Burning Ashes!
Avatar 🦇 1:30pm

i remember 'the Nightbird' Allison Steele very well from PLJ.
Avatar 🦇 1:34pm
