Hi Doug - Yes, the big selling point for the Health and Happiness shows is the alleged improved sound. And maybe some better notes. Squeezing the final dimes from people still buying CDs and serious about the sound. At least Hank's stuff isn't among the casualties of the UMG fire we're just learning about 11 years later.
  9:15am davefromtoronto:

i like this hank stuff with the drifting cowboys much better than his studio stuff

million dollar voice and a 10 cent brain"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

The Mother's Best recordings I have here have retained all the in-studio banter that got cut out of the commercial release.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Pedro in Arlington:

Got my copy of the original Health and Happiness CD issues at a Smithsonian program on Hank about 20 years ago. Don Helms was there and he signed my Hank fan club card. Hank's daughter Jett was also there but what could she say about a man she never met? Robert Christgau was also there along with Colin Escott and even Lucinda Williams, at least for the opening discussion. Not a bad day. Escott was a bit too pompous, even for a music writer.

I suppose Escott has earned his way to pomposity. If anyone has.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Pedro in Arlington:

Indeed, Escott has done so much important work. He was just terribly dismissive and smug when I asked him about the possibility of the Blue Sky Boys ever being reissued in complete sets. Said it would never happen. It did, just a few years later. Bear Family and JSP. He's a fine historian and producer. Just shouldn't bet the ponies.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Pedro in Arlington:

Still, a fine Smithsonian program. Christgau unloaded on Rolling Stone when I asked how he could call Lucinda's "Car Wheels" a "perfect" album but the review gave it 4.5 stars. Dopey editors messing even with his stuff.

There's nothing premature or even mature about Uncle Michael. His Hinky Dinky Time is nothing but good clean fun. Keep your mouses pointed at the Drummer Stream. He's up next!
