Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Rich in Washington:

Oh man. This is gorgeous. I sort of lost track of this album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Spankyflop:

So glad I got to see Roky (at Metallica's Orion Festival in Atlantic City, of all places).
  12:06pm Rory:

My favorite Roky song
  12:07pm Rory:

Er something like that
Avatar 12:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Roky represents so much to so many.
The One & Only.
We're Gonna Miss You alright.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Rich in Washington:

aw, Joe. You're gonna make me cry and I'm at work.
  12:07pm Andrea in Jersey City:

Hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Phillippe Bastille:

Howdy Afternoon Joe and everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Krys O.:

Hey, Joe B.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Mick:

I was not so secretly hoping you'd do a Roky show
Avatar 12:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I hope he's having a great laff w/ SydBarrett & SkipSpence @ our expense & finding Peace.
Avatar 12:11pm Joe B:

greetings all! thanks for tuning in. live music from vicky and the vengents coming up in a little bit!
Avatar 12:11pm SmokinJ:

Fantastic!
  12:11pm Kenny rotten:

Hello Joe
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:13pm tim from champaign:

The first time my daughter responded to music when she was about 7 months old was to You're Gonna Miss Me. She started flapping her arms, then bouncing up and down when the song started. I thought it was about the most appropriate way to respond to a Roky song.
  12:13pm Rory:

I never had the bloody hammer!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Rich in Washington:

This is ripping!
  12:13pm holland oats:

loving this tribute - roky was thee best
Avatar 12:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Roky's Voice simply got to someplace no other did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm blee:

YES!!!
Avatar 12:14pm Chrissy of The Heights:

Bloody Hammer is always a hard song to listen to. This version fucking rips though. Thanks, Joe!
  12:15pm frenchee:

I've been waiting for the Belock Roky Erickson tribute! ToT's set was good too. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Rich in Washington:

I think one of my earliest music on the radio memories was hearing 13th Floor Elevators' Fire Engine as a very young kid and it made a huge impression - the sung siren sounds, the weird warbly jug sound (I had no idea what made that sound until many, many years later).
  12:16pm Rory:

It’s times like these lucifer I see are infinite
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Jmcgreivey:

Joe McGasko reminded me (by playing the Southwest FOB) of the Texas Twisted comp I have, with 10 nicely recorded live Elevators tracks (better-sounding than the International Artists CD of the first album, for sure).
Avatar 12:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Fire Engine' is about DMT - in 1966. It's incredible.
  12:19pm Rory:

Btw I can literally relate to Don’t Shake Me Lucifer, no joke :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Rich in Washington:

Oh wow, RR1163! I had no idea!
Avatar 12:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Elevators' code (except the drummer - & according to book 'Eye Mind') was to not play or record unless Tripping. In mid1960s Texas. The freaking GratefulDead were incredulous. Then Roky represents a kind of purgatory & resurrection back into active relevance that compares in one sense to Brian Wilson's - & in another - is kind of w/out comparison @ all.
@Rich: 'Take you to "DMT" place in my - fire engine'...
  12:23pm holland oats:

"the empty," no?
Avatar 12:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

DMT/the empty...
  12:24pm frenchee:

LOL, RRNov63: "the Grateful Dead were incredulous"
Avatar 12:24pm Chrissy of The Heights:

@Rory: Me too on DSML! For the longest time I thought the lyrics were "I been up all night and no suicide clogged the works" and thought yeah...I can relate...sleep deprivation makes you wanna die sometimes...
  12:25pm holland oats:

that's your interpretation, or is a band member quoted talking about it? i don't remember that in the 'eye mind' book
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Matt Fiveash:

Holy fuck, this is scorching!
Avatar 12:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

There were very early Psychedelic researches @ the University in Austin...a bit like Ken Kesey's experience..
Roky was committed to the insane asylum w/ no hope of release for some time! There's your Horror film...
@holland: I just read 'Eye Mind' about it, really...it's been much discussed...
  12:27pm Woo:

1st time I heard the Elevators was when I bought a copy of Nuggets in the cutout bin in the 70s. That purchase had some last effect.
Avatar 12:27pm Joe B:

while i love every version of the iwnd and more, this is the best version, despite the crappy audio because i forgot my copy at home!
  12:27pm SeanG:

ROKY RULES!
  12:28pm Rory:

@RevRabbit, for some grass too...
  12:28pm Rory:

The State of Texas is literally insane.
  12:29pm holland oats:

@rr k thx
Avatar 12:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I think older sibling here in NewEngland playing Mono Man in Lyres/DMZ were my probly my earliest inklings of Rokyness...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:29pm tim from champaign:

I really dislike the state of Texas but I do appreciate that so many weirdos come from there.
Avatar 12:30pm SmokinJ:

Crappy audio better than no audio.. usually... :)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:31pm karlward:

Joe: thanks so much for bringing Roky to Monty Hall, and also for broadcasting that show. We owe you one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Dano59:

Love this one ... and the monster songs of course. I got the Pysch Sounds picture disc this year and am playing it endlessly.
  12:31pm holland oats:

caught one of his last (maybe last) maxwell's shows, so great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Rich in Washington:

Roky's voice is like a Les Paul overcranked out of a Pignose amp. Bad quality recordings of him don't detract from it one bit.
Avatar 12:33pm Joe B:

last show at maxwells was november 2012 if i'm not mistaken
  12:33pm holland oats:

sounds about right
Avatar 12:33pm Carmichael:

Heya Joe and Roky. Texas is a good place to be FROM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

This set is smoking, bubbling and about to boil over! Watch out!
  12:34pm Esther Crow:

yeah Joe! spinning the best of ROKY! can't wait for VV!!!!!
Avatar 12:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...much later Julian Cope reinforced it...
In Garage - Texas has a special place. Scenes are Darwinian: Has to be enuff activity to sustain it - but isolated enuff to be itself apart... 'Eye Mind' makes point it was kind of the 'Third Coast' - & - like w/ Chet Helms & Janis - a Texas-SanFrancisco interaction... 'Eye Mind' calls it a classic case there & then of Avant-garde & Old Guard - & only a bit later the 'Cosmic Cowboys' come about...such rapid change from like 1966 to '69. The Elevators' still not recognized for their achievement & dues. Iggy for one says he thinks of them often when people rhapsodize about the Stooges...The recording quality in one sense is classic Garage LoFi - but then again - a gawdamn shame...
  12:35pm eric in sodak:

Electro-jug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm joe:

'ello folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm joe:

I was only lucky enought to see Roky play once and that was when I celebrated New Years with him at Maxwells.
  12:39pm Rory:

All this talk of Texas and no mention the weirdest of the weirdos Gibby Haynes
Avatar 12:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Successfully following Roky!
Love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Mike Sin:

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 12:46pm tim from champaign:

Way cool set, Joe! Vicky and the Vengents are new to me. I'm digging it. Pretty scrappy and has a bit of a Detroit vibe.

Avatar 12:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 12:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Odd that Austin is the Capital...but there's a whole lot of Texas all around it! As it is in States...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

3 Day Stubble are also from Texas.
  12:54pm Rory:

Rock n Roll Backlash is the first Woggles I go into!
Avatar 1:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The energy & feel of this band.
The Sincerest Condolences.
Avatar 1:45pm KP in DC:

When I saw Jeff with the Woggles he was playing an old hollow body electric that looked weird and familiar. I had just seen the Pretty Things in London and it occurred that Phil Taylor had used the same model. It was, I think, a Harmony Stratotone, right out of 1963.
  1:49pm Tim from LH:

His guitar tone on their records is phenomenal!
Avatar 1:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A Model of Punk'n'Roll Gittar.
Avatar 1:57pm Carmichael:

Great Spirit cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm mcgreivey:

Joe made me get out my Billy Bragg and Outrageous Cherry records this morning. Now you're making me get out my Man or Astroman records. But I can't listen to them until tomorrow because I have to listen to the rest of your show, and then I have to listen to Scott's show. Well, and Jim Price, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Hopey Sockmonkey:

Going to have to see if I can find my Guadalcanal Diary vinyl.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 2:21pm tim from champaign:

Cool. I've never actually heard Guadalcanal Diary. I remember being a young teen in the mid 80s and looking at the charts in the back of Rolling Stone. I remember being intrigued by the college rock charts because of evocative band names like Guadalcanal Diary.
Avatar 2:21pm Henry:

saw GD play in athens in the late 80s. great show.
Avatar 2:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Lips of Steel' - earworm since '87
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Spankyflop:

I've seen Guadalcanal Diary. I can't for the life of me remember who they opened for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Spankyflop:

I remember liking them and thinking I'll have to check them out, but then they broke up.
  2:27pm Andrea in Jersey City:

Great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Spankyflop:

I also saw the Woggles in Wildwood NJ on the beach. It was a complete surprise.
Avatar 2:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

How good is this Cover? I ask you.
  2:42pm Chi Bill:

Wow, was that (Big Beat Strong) Sock it to me - Mytch Ryder cover? I like!!! Almost sounded like some original 50's band that he stole from, ha!
  2:42pm Jeff formerly from Rahway:

Great show Joe! RIP Jeff Walls.
  2:43pm P-90:

Love “Be Seeing You”!
Also: Happy Birthday Curtis Mayfield!
Avatar 👻 2:44pm David Shortell:

I was completely uninformed about both "Man or Astro-Man?" and the Woggles when I decided to take a blind gamble by attending their 1993 show at Maxwell's (It's strange that MOAM were not headlining!). The opening act were called Date Bait. i never heard from them again.
  2:45pm P-90:

“Won’t be seeing you”, you’re gonna make me cry...
Avatar 👻 2:46pm David Shortell:

I saw Vicky & the Vengents at Roxy & Dukes on Chuck Berry's final living birthday. I think 5 people showed up.
Avatar 👻 2:51pm David Shortell:

How many Prisoner-inspired songs are there? There's Iron Maiden's "The Prisoner", the Times' "I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape", the Jam's "Away From the Numbers"...
George Harrison's son Dhani named his band "thenewno2".
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for an entertaining show today, Joe. And RIPs to the gentlemen we've lost.
