We could use more men goin' crazy turning their attentions to saxophones.

Hey MFW, hey all

Mr. Fine Wine:

Hello, chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
Little Danny:

Before the "Screaming" sobriquet?
Avatar 8:11pm
Billy Jam:

this song is amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Time to take the motorcycle out to get some gas in it. Wish I would've bought a helmet with Bluetooth. Looking forward to the anniversary show next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
ultradamno:

I think he had to go through a "hollerin'" apprenticeship period.

Great, great song. agreed.
  8:12pm
JtotheK:

@Dan - my question exactly! ‘Conversational Tone’ Hawkins doesn’t have the same catchiness ...
  8:13pm
JtotheK:

Hi Mr Fine Wine. Good evening one and all. Excuse me while I grab a brahski.
Avatar 🍷 Swag For Life Member 8:13pm

after the spell didn't work, @LD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

Ha you guys. I don't have time to look up a discography, but I assume it predates "Spell"...

Awesome Jimmy Ricks track!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
Little Danny:

Agreed! I know a coupla great versions, but I think Ricks's is tops. His voice is so right for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm
Little Danny:

It does look like '56's "I Put a Spell On You" 45 is where he officially became Screamin' Jay.
  8:23pm
P-90:

He came a long, long way from his teenage “Whisperin’ Jay Hawkins” days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

What about his Mouthin' Jay days?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Little Danny:

Unrelated. Hawkins's performance as a Memphis hotel manager in Jarmusch's Mystery Train is such a pleasure
  8:28pm
P-90:

Well, if you want to go all the way back to “Teethin’ Jay Hawkins”...
  8:29pm
JtotheK:

‘Hushed Volume’ Hawkins was an underrated era.
Avatar 🍷 Swag For Life Member 8:29pm
chresti:

Haha P-90
Avatar 8:30pm
Hot Fish:

Similarly, it makes one wonder if there was ever a Mr. Fortified Wine.
  8:30pm
JtotheK:

Haven’t seen Mystery Train. On the list!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
ultradamno:

Jiffy Squid!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

Har. Rufus Thomas also appears in Mystery Train!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Little Danny:

@ultradanno: GOOD LORD YES!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
Little Danny:

Man the Volumes really had some great 45s. Totally new to me, that one
  8:34pm
JtotheK:

Have seen Jarmusch Tom Waits “Down By Law” though.
  8:35pm
JtotheK:

Oh, Mystery Train is available thru Criterion Channel so I can watch it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Sorry MFW got distracted and just realized it was 7:30 here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

Welcome, MN.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

What's a Jiffy Squid?
  8:39pm
JtotheK:

Area shop had this Four Pros 45 in the “free with purchase” section...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
ultradamno:

I love those distracted sounding background vocals!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
ultradamno:

@MFW It's one of Jay's more memorable line reading from the movie

www.youtube.com...
  8:42pm
JakeGould:

“Mystery Train” is a really great film on all levels. But the Japanese tourists in Memphis? Best part. Rufus Thomas hits them up for a light in the train station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

...which led me to curse the New York Times and throw my copy to the floor in anger...they ran a still from Mystery Train with the review, and the caption ID'd the actors playing the Japanese couple but didn't mention that RUFUS THOMAS WAS FEATURED PROMINENTLY IN THE PIC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
ultradamno:

There's a great story related by Jarmusch on the BR/DVD's from Criterion. Jay had served in the South Pacific and been tortured there. He claimed to be having a problem with working with the young Japanese actors...until he met them, found out they were big fans, had them fawn all over him, and all was well.
  8:45pm
JtotheK:

(... re Four Pros 45 - it had a crack - but plays!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
ultradamno:

@MFW, yeah, no excuse for that, I agree.
  8:46pm
JakeGould:

The New York Times is really hard to defend on the pop culture front.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
Little Danny:

The movie exudes an atmosphere in such an appealing and specific way
  8:49pm
JakeGould:

@ultradamno: It’s kinda believable. When I was a kid in the 1970s in NYC being openly anti-German was acceptable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
ultradamno:

We're about the same age, sounds like. I experienced much the same in the midwest.
Avatar 🍷 Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
chresti:

Barracuda the car or dance?
  8:50pm
JakeGould:

@MrFineWine: If a loudmouth clown like me knows that was Rufus Thomas maybe I can take over David Brooks gig? You never know!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

Yes, that makes sense, JakeGould.
  8:52pm
JakeGould:

I think Sarah Silverman is the only person I heard of recently openly talking about how her family would give anyone who owned a German car grief as a kid. Part of her Los Angeles Jew girl upbringing. Good woman!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Mr. Fine Wine:

We had a bit of that too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Little Danny:

I love Sarah Silverman but she's from New Hampshire
  8:56pm
JtotheK:

Great show, thanks for the tunes Mr Fine Wine! Cheers everybody!!!

Avatar 🍷 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm

Thanks MFW! Happy DSV anniversary/birthday in advance!

I don’t know everything. That’s why David Brooks is smiling right now.
