Hey Danny. Was listening to a Pete Smith mix on mixcloud of British issues of northern soul songs and doing coding exercises and lost track of time. Missed the first 5 minutes.

The flipside of this track is a song co-written by a J. Mathis. Not *the* J. Mathis, I assume?

I might suggest a morphine drip for the next few songs, Jason
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm

I've honestly never listened to it, Dean. It certainly would have been an unorthodox collab

JtotheK 78 records update: I found a Harry Revel 'Music out of the Moon' 78 boxset. Only problem - I have no way to play the damn things. So it goes...
Avatar 10:18pm

Appreciating the hippy-flavored mellowness. Entranced by candlelight.
Avatar 📉 Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
JtotheK:

(Which is less of a problem than if I /did/ have a way to play the damn things. Because then that would mean I'd have 78s to file and look at. Good grief.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Little Danny:

@Dean: just listened in cue. It's actually a pretty good late '60s psych-y rock instrumental
  10:22pm
Dean:

Tuvan/Mongolian throat singing has been dubbed by UNESCO an art of "intangible cultural heritage of humanity." I get it. But when I hear it I have the same response I have to Billy Corgan's vocals for Smashing Pumpkins. These singers need more fiber in their diet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm

78s are a huge commitment for sure! I dabble in them, but try to keep it tidy. There's just so much incredible music that only came out on 78, though, alas
Avatar 10:24pm

@LD: I've lost too many 78's by them cracking or dropping them. I have ,many that can't be found anywhere else, especially my Mexican ones...

@Danny - agreed. I saw a Joe B. documentary and admire 78 collectors but my my my the effort involved.

Dean i take it you didn’t enjoy the Paul Pena doc Genghis Blues?
  10:26pm

78s are a major source of otherwise impossible to hear classical recordings. We can thank Ward Marston and St. Laurent, among several others, for reviving them.

Re: Movie talk. This week I watched 'Bathtubs Over Broadway', a documentary about Industrial Musicals. From the dude behind Dave Letterman's record collection. Worth a watch. I didn't realize Jello Biafra was into that stuff.

@Matt from New Orleans: I saw "Genghis Blues" in the theater when it came out. Really enjoyed it. And Paul is/was from NOLA, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm

@JtotheK: if you're interested, I interviewed the director of "Bathtubs Over Broadway," Dava Whisenant, a few months back. She's great. Here's the show - interview starts at 25:30 ... www.wfmu.org...

Matt from New Orleans:

Paul Pena lived in San Francisco. Paul Pena was a blind blues musician who was most famous for writing jet airliner which the Steve Miller band recorded. Later in life he would sit in his house and listen to a shortwave radio and heard tuvan throat singing and became fascinated and taught himself how to do it on his own.
