	1:47pm Rich in Washington: I still have a few packages of unopened Swire/Intermagnetic 'rainbow' cassettes stowed away somewhere. When I die, my offspring will just scratch their heads and think I just hoarded any old thing.

	2:01pm Carmichael: I still have my metal cassette tapes, as well as a suitable player. I also have a cassette machine that I use to transfer my old mix tapes to MP3 files.

	2:06pm fred: @carmichael: what would you recommend to digitize cassettes or records? I used to have a minidisk thing that did that well, but it got stolen years ago (that must have been a very disappointed thief)
	2:07pm βrian: I have the same problem, @fred. I have some recordings of my father that are at risk.
	2:14pm sphere: from my experience, getting records and cassettes into digital form is easy, but chopping them up into separate tracks is an absolute pain.
	2:14pm Rich in Washington: I just send my Tascam deck straight into the soundcard of a computer as a AIFF for editing, processing later (yeah. right). No need for fancy converters. I see those cheap walkman knockoff players with USB out and cringe. They just look cheezy. Not knockin' USB/Firewire interfaces - I've just never felt like I needed one for ripping records or tapes.
	2:15pm Linda Lee: i've done a lot of digitizing with an analogue system, through a T cable that runs between the analogue amp & the computer's mic jack ~ i used audacity to convert the raw data file to sound files.
	2:16pm Linda Lee: you do one track at a time, if you want. chop it up however you like. easy peasy.
	2:17pm Linda Lee: the T cable has male RCA plugs > male mini plug.
	2:18pm Linda Lee: with audacity it doesn't have to be mp3.
	2:18pm Linda Lee: it's just really damn time consuming. but with irreplaceable sounds, it's a good idea.
	2:20pm Linda Lee: in audacity you can clean up the sound, too. reduce tape hiss on tapes, take out pops in vinyl lps. it's always been a good program for me. easy to learn. intuitive.
	2:20pm Rich in Washington: That's what I do, LL. Audacity's great.
	2:20pm βrian: So I'd need to run from my Nakamichi to a USB Type-C port. How does that work?

	2:23pm Rich in Washington: I love some of the noise reduction tools of Audacity. As far as fixing major fidelity problems, I sometimes think I have a tin ear. Right now, I'm just ripping as many tapes as I can and doing almost no editing or restoration - just bulk archiving. Eventually, I need to study how to really use EQ and noise reduction properly.

	🍝 2:24pm diciassette: Behringer makes a good, affordable DAC, UCA202. I have it hooked up to one of the tape loops. Can record anything w/Audacity.

	2:28pm Rich in Washington: Open reel is fun because you can physically manipulate the tape, its movement, etc. I still have an old Akai, which I baby and only set up when absolutely necessary. It needs restoration, but I don't have the funds, sadly.
	2:29pm Andrew Waterloo: You can also get tiny USB mixers from Behringer, I use one to connect laptop and desktop to my stereo.. haven't tried the USB port yet

	2:41pm Rich in Washington: I've just never used USB for audio. I'm not purposely a luddite - I just don't know why I would it need to send audio into my computer for. I've just always sent the analog signal into a computer that way ever since computers have had stereo soundcards.

He would end up with a pile of tangled tape on stage next to him.

	2:14pm Rich in Washington: I just send my Tascam deck straight into the soundcard of a computer as a AIFF for editing, processing later (yeah. right). No need for fancy converters. I see those cheap walkman knockoff players with USB out and cringe. They just look cheezy. Not knockin' USB/Firewire interfaces - I've just never felt like I needed one for ripping records or tapes.
	2:15pm Linda Lee: i've done a lot of digitizing with an analogue system, through a T cable that runs between the analogue amp & the computer's mic jack ~ i used audacity to convert the raw data file to sound files.
	2:16pm Linda Lee: you do one track at a time, if you want. chop it up however you like. easy peasy.
	2:17pm Linda Lee: the T cable has male RCA plugs > male mini plug.
	2:18pm Linda Lee: with audacity it doesn't have to be mp3.
	2:18pm Linda Lee: it's just really damn time consuming. but with irreplaceable sounds, it's a good idea.
	2:20pm Linda Lee: in audacity you can clean up the sound, too. reduce tape hiss on tapes, take out pops in vinyl lps. it's always been a good program for me. easy to learn. intuitive.

Right now, I'm just ripping as many tapes as I can and doing almost no editing or restoration - just bulk archiving. Eventually, I need to study how to really use EQ and noise reduction properly.

	2:28pm Rich in Washington: Open reel is fun because you can physically manipulate the tape, its movement, etc. I still have an old Akai, which I baby and only set up when absolutely necessary. It needs restoration, but I don't have the funds, sadly.
