Favoriting May 22, 2019: Double Gravity

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Album art from Fred Frith's Gravity

Gravity is Fred Frith’s prescient and arguably delicious 1980 album
that marked the inevitable coalescence of the downtown improv and noise scenes
toward bands and genres. This show celebrates the original song cycle
and a 2013 live re-construction.

When chresti gets home we can peel Sem's eyes open and take a lesson from Prof. Schell.

Hello Henster! Double time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
Webhamster Henry:

It's not particularly relevant to today's show, but I'd just like to mention I was part of the Pauline Oliveros tribute here in Kingston last Sunday.

doctorjazz:

That Frith was really cool, as is this next track (still Frith?)!
Hi folks!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:22pm
david w:

He djazz, all Frith today, from one song cycle.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
david w:

@Henry, I imagine Pauline was quite present.

Love it! Nothing like progressive accordion music (receipt maybe progressive tuba music). So much Eastern Europe.

Arguably delicious.

Oh, Gail. You read that somewhere. And steveo! This is an apology free zone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
steveo:

in that case, I'm sorry that i apologized . . . before i forget, i went to the whitney biennial and there's a violin video piece by laura ortman whose work you introduced to me here earlier this year. (i liked it a lot)

Also curious that 24 years later and after all the history, Frith was still interested in this material.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:12pm

Oops 34 years later1

Schell:

Frith was in Seattle most recently in December, with his trio (Jason Hoopes and Jordan Glenn).
Avatar 4:14pm
Schell:

But you know who else was in town a couple weeks ago? Who used to play avant-rock in a band very similar to Henry Cow (even sharing a drummer therewith)?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
david w:

I'm guessing Goebbels, but you may have tipped your hand...
Avatar 4:19pm
Schell:

This tune in 11-beat could come straight out of 70s Zappa.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
david w:

And the guitar tone too.
Avatar 4:20pm
Schell:

You're right David. Will have a review of that in a couple weeks. Goebbels is great, one of the very few who manages to do the vernacular music/orchestral modernism coupling without being cringeworthy or pretentious.
Avatar 4:21pm
Schell:

Guess it's not consistently in 11, this passage sounds like 7+8 alternating with 12.
Avatar 4:22pm
Schell:

Which reminds of Partch's Bewitched, and we recently had the premiere of the original version of that over at UW. We do get the occasional highlight out here in this otherwise frustratingly provincial town.

this time i think of fred frith...
