Jock'n'roll?
  8:57am Listener Robert:

The vocals must be: "Ow, ow, ow...!"
  8:58am Listener Robert:

I shudder to think what he does with the sticks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59am Doug Schulkind:

He started out using the sticks, then switched to the cymbal.
Avatar 9:01am Herb Stevens:

Afternoon all! Really hoping that cymbals guy gets pushed off the screen by the playlist. I'm listening at work so don't need him on the screen. hehehe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Doug Schulkind:

Not sure if the link is still working. Here is the original source for today's playlist "art":www.instagram.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

@Herb Stevens
My apologies. We must all make some sacrifices for the sake of art. Maybe that's his name. Art.)
  9:04am Listener Robert:

Good what's left of Passover. I concocted a thoroughly irreligious dish in its honor. It's a roast beef sandwich with a Passover matzo stuck in there. The matzo's crunch makes up for my several missing teeth in chewing the meat, but without the bread it'd just crumble all over the place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Uncle Michael:

Why is there a Bill Mac gif on this playlist?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Doug Schulkind:

I still think he should call his show Bill Mac 'n' Cheese.
  9:09am Listener Robert:

If he plays cool jazz it could be Chilly Mac.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:10am doctorjazz:

Hey all...gif looks more like it would work as self flagellation on Yom Kippur (...I have sinned...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

I've always said, if you gotta flagellate, self-flagellate.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

He plays with such...feeling.
Avatar 9:28am Herb Stevens:

Really enjoying this. Can't help but wonder what the lyrics are about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

The song is either telling the story of the history of a particular family (usually royalty), or admonishing listeners to follow a particular set of social mores and behaviors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Uncle Michael:

I'm not here...but I'm *here*.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

Artie's at the party!
Avatar 9:39am still b/p:

So...I looked at the Instagram clip to see if there was some rational or interestingly irrational premise of exploration, expression or punishment going on with our friend Nutty Rich there. When he finishes the series of mixed self-strikes and items, he says, "The wonderful thing about improvisation..." then video stops before he completes the thought. Guesses...?
a) "you don't have to dress up for it."
b) "the audience and your 'nads never know what's coming next."
c) "someone's always willing to give the drummer some ice afterward."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

The wonderful thing about improvisation...

"It feels so good when you stop."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Sem:

Self S & M? The drummer needs some, but I am pretty sure, not some of that.

Hello, Doug, regulars, high tests, and those who identify as leaded.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Jeff Golick:

@Brian: who's that sweet lookin' bird?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

Oliver Nelson on alto sax. The other alto here is Eric Dolphy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

This would be Eric Dolphy. Of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

Richard Williams on trumpet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

Roy Haynes, who turned 94 last month and is still pounding the skin, on drums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

Oliver Nelson doubling on tenor sax.
  10:43am Listener Gregory:

I think my favorite Dolphy is when he is placed in a more "mainstream" group and still does his outside thing. The contrast is usually incredible.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:43am Brian in UK:

@Jeff. Heggerty, the escaping chicken. She is pecked by the others in the run and escapes. A dilemma, I do not want chickens eating flowers and suchlike but do not want her to be beaten up. Pecking order really exists.
Longer answer than you expected?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

My Favorite Dolphy, starring Ray Walston?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Jeff Golick:

@Brian: I would honestly like to hear more.
  10:50am Listener Gregory:

No, Doug, "I Dream of Dolphy," in which Eric uses witchcraft to enchant the listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

The Dolphy Hillbillies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Surely the plot is obvious.
  10:54am Listener Gregory:

Albert Mangelsdorff was a listened-to musician in the 70s, and I don't think I've heard any reference to him since then... until now. Hard to understand this neglect.
  10:54am Listener Gregory:

Doug, who is going to play Jethro? I can see Charles Mingus playing Granny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Gunter Hampel will play Jethro.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

  10:59am Listener Gregory:

Norman Granz will play Mr. Drysdale, the banker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

No, Listener Gregory. Leonard Feather.
  11:01am Listener Gregory:

You might be right, Doug. I'd like to see both of them audition for the part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

May the best man win.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:04am Brian in UK:

Jeff, I think that Heggerty wants to be a house chicken, this is unlikely. She will never be supplying early morning cups of tea or offering to cook dinner. She was the runty one when we got the latest rescue chooks and a bit like us the chickens aim for the weaker ones. We have already had to retrieve her from next doors garden, twice. Counselling might be an expensive option, the chicken not me.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:05am Brian in UK:

Doug, the best man wins if he pulls the bridesmaid. Sexist? Maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Jeff Golick:

You say Deram, the playlist says Dream, let's call the whole thing Heggerty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Wonder what Freud would say about that typo, Jeff Golick.
Avatar 11:10am still b/p:

I can never hear Uncle Jed without wondering what he's wearing.
  11:11am Listener Gregory:

I first read "Frank Kakra" as Franz Kafka. That would be in keeping with today's GIF.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

The House Chickens was the name of my first band in high school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am chresti:

I was just looking at Jed, pretty snazzy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Jeff Golick:

I admire Heggarty's ability to fly the coop; maybe she could star in a remake of Dolphy's Heroes.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:12am Brian in UK:

We pronounce it dear-rum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: Freud would say, "Get off my couch and take those lousy records with you. That'll be €150."
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:14am Brian in UK:

Jeff, trying to figure how she gets out. Thought I had made it a fortress.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am chresti:

Build a separate house for bullied chickens?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

And you serve your dear rum at room temperature, unlike we uncultured Americans.
  11:14am Listener Gregory:

I remember Dolphy's Heroes, where the band is forced to wait in the horribly cramped green room until the evil club owner agrees to pay them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Emotional support chicken is the name of my next radio show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Jeff Golick:

[attempts a brexit/chicken escape pun; gives up, fruitlessly, hands in the air]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Where the evil doctor assumes Dolphy is a drug addict and not a diabetic, and let's him die in a heap.

Not a comedy.
