Well Schell swell!

Michael Schell:

There are some perks to being in Seattle, this past weekend we had what is likely the last ever world premiere of a Partch composition (on the original instruments).
Avatar 3:25pm
northguineahills:

Awesome, Michael!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
david w:

Very cool. Who oversees those instruments nowadays?
Avatar 3:27pm
northguineahills:

Havnen't they moved them to the University of California - San Diego, somewhat lately?
  3:28pm
Michael Schell:

They're still owned by Danlee Mitchell. Oversight has passed to Charles Corey, who was Dean Drummond's student. They've been housed at University of Washington the past five years. I'll be writing up the event in the next week or two. The premiere was of the first (chamber) version of The Bewitched. It's the last surviving Partch music manuscript that had never been performed before.

Sem:

Don't mind me, just sitting in my orgone box, speakers set for the heart of the sun.
  3:30pm
Michael Schell:

northguineahills, might you be thinking of a partial replica set that is used by the (confusingly named) Partch ensemble in San Diego?
Avatar 3:30pm
northguineahills:

Ahh, I remember Irwin having an interview w/ one of curators of his collection about a decade ago....

@Sem: Don't worry, it's the (Wilhelm) Reich thing to do!
  3:31pm
Michael Schell:

There is also a complete set of replica instruments in Europe that was commissioned by musikFabrik in 2013 for their Goebbels production of Delusion of the Fury. There's some uncertainty over the future of the Partch instrumentarium at UW though, something I'll be reporting on in the review.

Sem always comes prepared.
Avatar 3:32pm

I think originally, they were kept at Montclair State (NJ).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:33pm

I think you all have sorted this Partch thing out pretty well. Michael tell us where we can read your piece.

Mentioning because this music reminded me.

Michael & all, thanks for Partch info!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
david w:

Hey Granny, maybe I should do an avant-hootenany episode?
  3:36pm
Michael Schell:

northguineahills, they were at Montclair State during Dean's guardianship, concurrent with all those great Newband concerts. Alas, his death basically ended that arrangements, and the instruments became homeless until they came to UW. Before NJ, the instruments were with Danlee Mitchell, who inherited them from Partch. They spent most of their time in storage in San Diego, being unveiled from time to time for specific productions (e.g., Gaburo's The Bewitched ca. 1983 and Revelation in the Courthouse Park a few years later). I don't know yet where the piece will appear, but probably at Second Inversion or Sequenza 21. I'll get the word out on my Web page (www.schellsburg.com) and on Twitter (@cribbageforum).

This Fire Over Heaven series is amazing, judging by the excerpts that have been played on this show. I'd probably be a regular there if it wasn't across an ocean
