Dean:

Not long ago, I discovered that Irvine Arditti of the eponymous, and nearly miraculous, string quartet, played on some pop album I'd recently acquired. I'm thinking it was one of Art Garfunkel's albums. Unlike Shahib in Sweden, Arditti was a mere credit among many in the ensemble. But I have a hard time wrapping my head around it. Arditti went on to prompt John Cage to complete his Freeman Etudes project, which he had abandoned when its original designated artist, Paul Zukofsky, complained that he couldn't perform anything beyond the first half of the work. Arditti surmounted the hurdle. Still, as a young artist, he had to "pay his dues."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm

Jerry wasn't a great pedal steel player, but he made it his
  11:07pm
Dean:

chresti, you should hear Jerry with Merl Saunders. Plenty jazzy blues.

I remember c.'74 or so deciding, largely on the basis of Jerry's steel playing for CSN&Y, that he was one of the great guitar players.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Little Danny:

Exactly. I wish he'd recorded more of it
  11:10pm
Dean:

He also manages to present a personality distinct from his musical artistry, but unlike some artists who manage the same, say, Glenn Gould, it's not a neurotic personality. He exudes charisma...and musical talent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Franco Twinkie:

Great is in the ears of the beholder. I saw/heard him play it in the New Riders and he was divine.
  11:15pm
Dean:

That would have been very, very nice. And yes, great is subjective, divine, maybe, not so much?
  11:16pm
Dean:

Of course, as listeners to Uncle Michael's show well know, I attended every Grateful Dead show ever. But missed a lot of NROTPS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
Little Danny:

@Franco: I forgot that that was Garcia. Those early New Riders albums are fantastic. "Dirty Business"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Little Danny:

During UM's live request show a coupla years ago I asked for "The Wheel," and he graciously complied
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
doctorjazz:

I think Jerry would have been the first to admit that he didn't have the technique of, say, Sneaky Pete or Buddy Emmons, with multiple pedals being manipulated and chords moving internally. It is a really challenging axe, and full time playing is probably required to master it. . But JG could always find the most musical line to insert in any musical situation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Franco Twinkie:

Well yeah, But to hear some one who is at the height of their power when you're just a kid and haven't heard that much live music, it kind of re arranges your molecules.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Little Danny:

On youtube, there used to be a '70s video of Garcia playing pedal steel by himself, onstage, to no one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
Little Danny:

I wholly agree, Franco

coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
doctorjazz:

No argument Franco, JG had a way of elevating the proceedings that wasn't necessarily technical in nature, I saw NRPS both ways, and with JG was the better band.
  11:28pm
dano59:

Two thumbs up: The Wheel, Windy + Carl, and this Koala. Trippy!
  11:30pm
Dean:

I sometimes smell music. Example: Prokofiev and vinegar. But mostly I dwell on its "diachronic" aspect--the way it moves through time--and its material aspect--the records themselves, the medium in which it's embodied. Put another way, I often enjoy listening to music less than playing records.
Avatar 11:35pm
geezerette:

Dean, some music reminds me of architecture. Seriously.
  11:37pm

That makes *perfect* sense, geezerette. I suspect that accounts for why, for a time, I aimed to become an architect (or, better yet, an architectural historian).
