Dean, if you are out there, you my be interested to know I got my copy of Piper at the Gates of Dawn at Lovells for 50 cents in 1975. My copy is on Tower.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Funky16Corners:

Lucky man! Piper is the only one of the "core" albums in my top 10 that I don't have an original of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
Franco Twinkie:

Larry, Lovells is still around and still great.
  10:29pm
Dean:

That's great, Franco. Haven't been to Lovell's in AGES, but just today what arrives in the mail? A package of several CDs burnt by a former Lovell's employee of outtakes from Genesis, Selling England, etc. He's a bit Floyd fan. I'm a selective fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Matt from New Orleans:

This is going well with the graphic novel I’m reading. It’s an adaptation of a Harpo Marx/Salvador Dali movie idea that never got made.

"a bit" should be "a big"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Franco Twinkie:

When ever I go see my accountant (like I am preparing to do,as we speak) I try and squeeze in a visit to Lovells. Of course, most stuff is researched and priced accordingly, but for some reason they're a bit sloppy with the sound tracks and older brit pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It is. The artwork is great but it would have been extremely difficult to pull off back in the late 30s.

Franco, it strikes me that you likely know Al, formerly of Lovell's, formerly of Al's Records one block west. He's the buddy who sent me the Genesis outtakes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm

Maybe. As you might suspect, I like to talk to strangers, especially about records!

Are you aware of the second Lovell's site, east on Whittier Blvd., in La Habra?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Franco Twinkie:

No!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Funky16Corners:

@NGH - My friends and I were DEEP into the 60s sounds from the UK and the garage sounds from the US. Piper at the Gates of Dawn was the musical equivalent of 'required reading'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
Funky16Corners:

I forot a crucial part of that story. While we kept replaying Astronomy Domine, my brother sat under a blanket with his 12-string guitar, "tuning" the strings until most of them broke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Funky16Corners:

So there's that...
Avatar 10:52pm
BrassKnuckles:

That's hilarious. Why did he feel the need to tune the strings beyond use? Did he have dog like hearing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
chresti:

I've done that with a guitar before
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Funky16Corners:

He was so, so, so very high. I think he was searching for just the right note, which sadly was just the other side of 'snapped strings'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Franco Twinkie:

Hanging around with people who are tripping if you're not can be a little exasperating. One night sitting by the swimming pool with a couple of friends who were blazing, I had to listen to the deep revelation about a gum wrapper that was really a miniature pair of pants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Funky16Corners:

Holy shit that's funny!
  10:55pm

I hear about miniature pairs of pants and gum wrappers just about every day. It's just my world.

This is one of my all time favorite PF space jams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Funky16Corners:

Oh boy, do I have stories. One time, a bunch of us trekked out to Long Island to see some bands and go to a house party. We get to the house and it bears little sign of habitation, save a huge marijuana plant in the foyer. Everyone dropped acid, and I got to watch the singer of one of the bigger NYC garage bands (who is sadly no longer with us) pass out on the floor, while a bunch of mod girls decided that they were going to try to paint his hair white so he'd look like Andy Warhol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Yeah, this one is good for the head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Jeff Ash:

I expect Clyde Clifford to cut in at any moment and inform us that this is "Beaker Street" on KAAY, Little Rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - I still want to find that guy's airchecks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Jeff Ash:

Let me assure you that tonight's show was much like that experience. Well done, sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Funky16Corners:

The stereo panning on some of these tracks is crazy. I can imagine those white-jacketed engineers at EMI losing their shit as Pink Floyd manhandled their mixing boards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Funky16Corners:

Thanks Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
Franco Twinkie:

Jeff, I remember picking up a Little Rock station playing Frank Zappa driving thru the Ozarks in the middle of the night! Considering where we were, it was a little peculiar. I wonder if it was KAAY?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
coelacanth∅:

(i'm trying to come up with what nyc garage band's singer would like like andy warhol if his hair was white)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
Funky16Corners:

I wish I could go back and really explore the world of late night clear channel radio stations. My father tells me stories about some of the crazy stuff he used to pick up on the car radio back in the day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - It was Mike Chandler of the Outta Place. I don't know how much he'd actually look like Warhol, but then, everyone was tripping
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Jeff Ash:

Franco, could be, depending on the year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
Franco Twinkie:

August 1974.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
coelacanth∅:

Larry i'm not familiar but yes -a lot of freedom of interpretation whilst tripping!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Jeff Ash:

Then almost certainly so, Franco! KAAY's prime was 1967 to 1977.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm
Franco Twinkie:

I have to tell you, it was funny. a couple of teenagers from Califoriy in hillybilly land. When we rolled into St. Louis about six in the morning, the first thing we see on the side of the road is a newspaper box with the headline - Nixon Resigns!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm

I keep hoping a similar newspaper will appear on our timeline
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm

F16C, maybe a trip to the Ozarks is in order.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm

Moby played a show at Columbia right before Play came out in the spring of 99. He played a bunch of songs off play that no one knew and got pissed that the crowd disengaged.

I wonder what they were expecting?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm

I don’t think anyone there really knew his music as Play was his mainstream breakthrough. He played Honey and people knew that and then Run On later on which had just started getting radio play.

I used to visit all the very gay places,
Those come-what-may places,
Where one relaxes on the axis,
Of the wheel of life,
To get the feel of life,
From jazz and cocktails.
The gals (girls) I knew had sad and sullen gray faces,
With distingué traces,
That used to be there.
You could see where,
They'd been washed away,
By too many through the day.
Twelve o'clock tales.
Then you came along,
With your siren song,
To tempt me to madness.
I thought for awhile,
That your poignant smile,
Was tinged with the sadness,
Of a great love for me.
I guess (Ah, yes, ) I was wrong.
Again, I was wrong.
Life is lonely again,
And only last year everything seemed so sure.
Now life is awful again.
A troughful of hearts could only be a bore.
A week in Paris might (will) ease the bite of it.
All I care is to smile in spite of it.
I'll forget you I will,
While yet you are still,
Burning inside my brain.
Romance is mush,
Stifling those who strive.
I'll live a lush life,
In some small dive.
And there I'll be,
While I rot with the rest,
Of those whose lives are lonely, too.
Lush life.

When I was in the seventh grade in 1968 and Mike Alstrand told me about this FM station waaay over on the left that played real long songs, my world changed. Kind of like when Chresti found WFMU just about a year ago. At this late date, it's all new again.Who the hell cares what the kids listen to.

wpix-fm was excellent for a burst of time, c.1978-1980. i'd already discovered wfmu by then but had yet to hear "rock", "punk", etc. on it -and that (and blues, etc.....) was still very much what i wanted to hear. wpix aired lots of live music, punk, stooges, velvets, lots of "underground" stuff from everywhere.
one morning, getting ready for school, i turned it on and it was "love songs. nothing, but love songs"
...they probably got shut down for making fun of that scumbag christopher columbus!
