Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm

Jocelyn, as much as i adore this virtual clubhouse, i suspect that online socializing is hindering our ability (as a society) to interact graciously in person. WFMU has many opportunities for folx to gather in person, and i think that's one reason why the WFMU family feels more stable than other online communities (even for those of us in far-flung places).

I try to balance my online interactions with local, in-person gatherings. Small is good, simple is good. But keep on showing up is the best.

John from Florham Park:

@jocelyn I am at a complete loss to what it is and Facebook is part of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Phillippe Bastille:

@Jocelyn Truly depends on the people and where you are. Lived in the house we are fixing up to move from for almost 20 years and know the names of only 3 of our neighbors, and have only been invited into two of their homes. Different story where we are moving to. Met all the neighbors and one has already traded keys to our front doors for emergency dog-walking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
Cmurtha:

This ties back to Bowling Alone, and a few other works that started popping up around the 80s onward. About how the failure of democratic institutions in America, and the crisis of America culture/community stemming from the to the revanchism of the late 70s and80s/the loss of regulations, and a new emphasis on the individual which justified these larger power grabs). Its strange we now live in "American Psycho"esque world. I think people my age and younger try to form these bonds and suceed, but there's just so much external preasure, I worry more about the kids born after my brother, who seem genuinely afraid of admitting to having feelings, or afraid of the damage to their image/themselves those kinds of relationships may entail. Though that last one is just personal observation, not sure if its actually BACKED by anything.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Cmurtha:

I will have to check out the documentary, but I do hope that Gupta ties this to the ultimate failure of the Civil Rights movement, and the blow back stemming from Stagflation, and the unrest of the 70s leading to the sanitized culture of control we find ourselves in now

Hi Sheila, it's true that Hispanics are not as stressed out as Americans. I lived in Puerto Rico for ten years and I lived in the Dominican Republic for three years. My American friends referred to the experience as culture shock. We can learn a lot from each other.

Bookstores have been a place for nurturing local community, and that's why it's a tragedy so many are closing. On Lopez Island, we have few public places where strangers are likely to interact socially for free, so the library has become one of the most important spots for such community building. We also have a free store which is always a fun place.

Its curious to see how that looking out for each other thing eveloves as neighborhoods turn over. My 89 yr old mom lives in a 50s-era development that has a lot of starter homes for new families. She doesn't have to worry about finding someone to clear her walk when it snows or mowing her tiny lawn. Neighbors step up and it just happens.

More or less on point and tacking on to CMurtha here: I am currently reading a book by Jonathan Metzl called “Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing America's Heartland.” It concerns not only how far-right policies undermine the physical health of everyone including white Americans who endorse those policies, but also lead to the fraying of a larger sense of community and a variety of negative psycho-social effects. Instability and zero-sum politics breeds mistrust breeds despair.

John from Florham Park: house flipping has certainly had a huge impact on SF.

I am happy to report that our neighborhood has a group trying to preserve the things we love (partly by challenging huge development projects) and that my home will be the gathering place for an evening of informational presentations and hanging out IN PERSON.

Ah - what did I miss? Oh - community! I've been thinking a lot about isolation in America - mainly because of the contrast with Istanbul, which is a place where I've almost immediately made fast friends. Plus they have a strong culture of common space sharing and hanging out. I've been in my city in the U.S. for 4 years and I have many more friends in Istanbul.

@Cmurtha Ahh - I can imagine actually living in Istanbul might be different. On this last trip I fell in with some artistic folks on the Asian side (we listened to old SBB shows which was just about perfect), so I had lots of 5 AM conversations and generalized collegiate-ness.

@Granny They had this really hearty chili for like $5 that could fill you up. There was a cooking school upstairs and I think a lot of their practice dishes would make their way down. And it was a walk, albeit a long one, from the St. Francis, where our client put us up.

@tneeld its closer to Azeri in that it retains lots of persian words/they speak russian/sprinkle russian into their speaking. As far as I know its similar enough that you can get by/understand a lot of what they say and the grammar/some other things are basically the same, but its more removed from Turkish then Azeri is/the pronunciation is different enough for the same words to cause confusion. I don't think it has vowel harmony. The only thing I remember for certain about it is that onlar = siz in uzbek

@Cmurtha - I only went for a few days during my Turkey trip. I landed in Baku and then pretty immediately (after wandering around the old city a bit and going through a medieval torture exhibit that felt like it was put together by local goth-y art students) took a bus to Quba and then a taxi up to Khinaliq. Pretty interesting place - the language they speak there has no relation to any nearby language - I think they're ethnically Albanian or something? Baku was nice, albeit famously windy.
