There are Mennonite farmers in traditional dress at my farmers market.
@queems they have common lineage. Some Mennonites don't do the traditional dress or avoidance of technology, I've known people of that branch.

Solar panels on Amish homes, who'd have thought, I thought the objection was to modern technology? Maybe I've missed the point.

when i go back to western ny i try to drive through amish areas just to see the laundry on the line and the folks tending their lawn by horse drawn reel mower.
  7:19pm
MelindafromAustin:

I’m from this area of the country. My grandma left the Amish religion when she was a teenager & became a race car driver & a pilot. Most of the Amish folks I know down there are very liberal, but traditions & ideas vary greatly. It’s important to remember that their religion is related to the Anabaptists who are huge in the areas of social justice & environmental protection. Just some food for thought.

I wonder if any Amish have ever listened to WFMU. They'd need electricity and internet access.
  7:32pm
MelindafromAustin:

From what I understand Anabaptism is the root ...the Amish came from that root. The Mennonites are the branch of Amish which chose to modernize a bit more and the core Anabaptists chose to move with the times all together.

Thank you, MelindafromAustin!

Yes, I always recommend a standalone audio player like VLC for listening to our streams on a desktop computer. It's way more reliable than any player running in a web browser. And when using VLC (or iTunes, or whatever) – I recommend the "128k AAC" link as the best sounding.

And for mobile use – yes, our apps. If you're using the iOS, note that you can choose the AAC stream there as well, at least for the main WFMU stream.

i went to the amish museum in old chatham and going through one of the buildings i asked the guide if the decor was always as we saw it and came to know it. he said no there were lots of bright paint colors and flocked or mylar wallpaper in the house before the state took it over and renovated it it what we would have thought it should be.

I can't think of any isolationist religious community that *didn't* have problems. Maybe some of the very first monastic communities, but after over 1000 years, we'll probably never know.

I think sexual abuse claims, similar to Jehovah's Witnesses, get handled in house and shut down by church elders. 'According to one report one of the elders told a Webster County sheriff’s investigator “that it was against the Amish Rules to report child sexual abuse,”' amishamerica.com...
