I saw a bunch of conservative EU delegates from New Caledonia on the subway this week. The annoying part is that they took up a lot of space and took a lot of time to get off the train, being rude while loudly complaining about young people (which probably means anyone short of 70)

"Gone With the Wind" does seem to have a difficult melody and phrasing. I think singing it would be quite hard.
  10:05am
mic_break:

Coincidentally, I was just listening to Gary Burton's "Genuine Tong Funeral" (really another Carla Bley 'stealth' album) this week. Coryell on guitar, with a very different feel. Never heard him in such a Hendrix-y mode as the track you just played (opening song section sounded very Hendrix ballad to me, right down to the drum fills). Search up a 1970s live set from Scandinavian TV, if it's still on there. In the post-Mahavishnu fusion zone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am
Jeff Golick:

@LG: Sinatra does a good version, c. late 1950s.

@mic_break: hiya! Thanks for the Coryell tip! (Did you happen to hear the Carla Bley interview that WFMU dj Scott McDowell did this past Wednesday?)
  10:11am

Yes! As should everyone. Informative and touching. Another late teens/late 70s music hero, for me. I need to get back to read Ethan Iverson's inside-fan postings.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am

Probably some kind of amplified trumpet business, I would guess. (No monsters are credited on the CD.)

Some odd blowing into the mouthpieces, especially low pitched horns, I'd guess

  11:03am

Uh-oh, I feel a whole GIF/JIF thing coming on with your pronunciation of "logy," Jeff.
  11:03am
Doug Schulkind:

Destination: BAGEL
  11:04am
Listener Gregory:

Speaking of which, we had a discussion a few weeks back of whether to pronounce Ches Smith's name "chez" or "chess." Well, I went straight to the horse's mouth to find out the answer: Bruce at Downtown Music Gallery.
  11:05am
Listener Gregory:

I asked Bruce how to pronounce it; he looked at me as if I was nuts; and said "chez"!! Then to prove it, he told me about every group that Smith was in before he moved to NY. I take this as definitive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
Jeff Golick:

Well, I dunno, @LG. I've met the guy -- he is yoga/dad buddies with my brother-in-law -- and by both of their accounts it is "chess." Might have to have him on the show to sort it out. Or better yet, Dave Sewelson gets him in studio in between babysitting gigs.
  11:07am
Listener Gregory:

Also: logy | ˈlōɡē |

dull and heavy in motion or thought; sluggish.

If Dave Sewelson ever runs out of ideas (not likely) settling pronunciation could be a lead.

Seriously though, Dave's show is a wonderful addition to an already great GTDR lineup

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am
Jeff Golick:

Does seem likely, @Doug.
  11:18am

It is amazing that a lot of jazz reference books don't give pronunciations even for very unusual names.
@Doug, if the question were about a recording, I would trust Bruce over the artist every time.

The last time I was in NYC I spent quality time at DMG at the feet of Bruce. Was too long ago.

This reminds me of Channel 3's "You Make Me Feel Cheap."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am

Schaap is ailing, I think? Anybody up on his well-being?
  11:40am
Dean:

I do, Jeff G., but what I don't like is other kids' parents.
  11:40am

He is only very seldom on the air now, and vague references are made to an illness, but no idea what.
  11:41am
Doug Schulkind:

Now I feel like a dolt. Feel better soon, Phil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am
Jeff Golick:

Bruce G. was talking about how their neighborhood has been changing...actual other businesses moving in, to what used to be a very quiet block. A temple above the store, and that's it. The graffiti I've seen lately -- "THE RICH KILLD NYC" -- seems to sum it up nicely.
  11:45am
Dean:

I was last at DMG when they were in Chinatown. Still there? Before that, I can't remember the store location, but I remember running into Matthew Shipp there, checking on how his product was moving.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am

Chinatown, yes. Well below ground.
  11:46am
Listener Gregory:

Schaap is posting on Facebook, so that's a positive sign.

@Dean Their previous store was on the Bowery, in NoHo; before that, 5th St in the East Village (when I found out about it).

Thanks, LG. I learned about them too late to make it to the 5th St. address. If they move again, I hope they head, oh, say, 3000 miles west.

Schapp seems to have a serious illness, but no information is out there that I've seen .He mostly plays "Encore presentations"in his KCR slots, but does live broadcasts here and there .
Jeff, I used to play a bit of guitar and an old friend who loved music, for some reason couldn't string 2 notes together in tune. I one got him to shout Sweet Jane in front of a crowd, and he killed it! (it didn't matter that the notes were all over).
  11:56am
Dean:

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure there's also an unopened Braxton record. I know for sure that I have sealed acquisitions from a weekend trip to now defunct East Side Records in Los Feliz. I walked out of there with fifty CDs that day.
