These "inland empire" towns can be pretty cool. James Fallows has written a bit about them, owing to his having grown up in Redlands. I used to travel from eastern LA County to Claremont for coffee and books. Not a long haul, but more than a handful of miles, and worth the trip.

When Fallows grew up there were still little houses from the 1900s in oramge groves. Orange blossom scented air. That's gone now. Still a college town though.

It's the "nothing/same" that touches me. I remember being in Victo one year for the festival. Early mornings, before the shows commenced, I found solace hanging at the Quebecois mall to grab coffee and read. Identical to familiar suburban sites in Southern California, except in French.
