Hiya Daniel! I saw Tarnation once at Spaceland, and yes, they were great. But on this particular night it was hard to concentrate on the band because Susan Tyrell was standing in front of me wearing transparent pants.

i liked the song "it's my Life" when it hit the clubs; then EmtyV started playing the video and it's a great one.
i bought the album and it's excellent...for 80s music!
i bought the follow up and lost interest but that was probably me -losing interest in cheap-sounding, predictable synthpop.
they were very much better than most.
rest in peace, Mr. Hollis.

The album I'm most familiar with is Laughing Stock. I've been playing upright bass for some time now, and I remember getting hipped to Talk Talk/Mark Hollis a while back by a good friend/fellow musician of mine. Their music definitely has this avant/through composed bent to it that spoke to us and the kind of improvised/through composed stuff we were doing.

coelacanth, yeah, Laughing Stock's way more ambient/spaced out but with certain shades of rock/blues to it. Seems like their album Spirit of Eden (which the track I heard on FMU was off of) was from the same period when they took things in that direction.
