Up until he hired George Handy, Boyd Raeburn and his band were a unremarkable society music orchestra. These tone poems were never released commercially. (Gee, I wonder why?!) They were recorded to V-Disc and sent overseas to U.S. servicemen during WWII.

Next up, the Stan Kenton band. Kenton himself was no great innovator, except that he hired brilliant and visionary music directors. The next track, "Trajectories," was written by Franklyn Marks.

And of course, Kenton hired virtuoso instrumentalists who could pull off the crazy scores put in front of them.

Another figure in this category is Patrick Williams, who did a lot of TV composing, but also some large group jazz recordings, like An American Concerto (1981) w/Phil Woods and the London Symphony Orchestra.

This Gunther Schuller piece was conducted by one of the great genius modernist innovators, George Russell. It is a pathetic embarrassment that I have not included Russell in this mix. Honestly, I feel Russell operated at a level ABOVE all this. More pioneering and less "dabbling in avant gardism" that some of what I have played today could be characterized as.
