Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:09am Brian in UK:

Doug, you can see them too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

Coleman Hawkins, genius of modern music full stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Uncle Michael:

Coleman Hawkins, former Topeka High School student pregnant pause.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

Up until he hired George Handy, Boyd Raeburn and his band were a unremarkable society music orchestra. These tone poems were never released commercially. (Gee, I wonder why?!) They were recorded to V-Disc and sent overseas to U.S. servicemen during WWII.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

"Sound strange to you? Well, that is what I saw."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

Next up, the Stan Kenton band. Kenton himself was no great innovator, except that he hired brilliant and visionary music directors. The next track, "Trajectories," was written by Franklyn Marks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

And of course, Kenton hired virtuoso instrumentalists who could pull off the crazy scores put in front of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

Next up, Bill Russo, who also did some writing for Kenton. Russo was a student of Lennie Tristano. We will hear some Lennie soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Helluva album cover for this one: en.wikipedia.org...
  10:30am Listener Gregory:

The excellent David Murray disc, Picasso, is partly an homage to the Coleman Hawkins song, I believe. I missed the latter, unfortunately.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:32am JtotheK:

I like the Kenton-related Baron von Ohlen album 'The Baron'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

I have not heard that, Listener Gregory. I must correct that.

Hello
  10:39am Martinibomb:

Listening from Portland Oregon. Hello everyone. Loving the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Uncle Michael:

That Rugulo suggests a lot of soundtrack music and so-called "crime jazz".
  10:40am Martinibomb:

Ohh I love Lennie Tristano.. possibly my fave musician of all time. Turkish Mambo always kills me.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:41am Brian in UK:

@Uncle, that thought crossed my mind.

Doug, does Duke Ellington's tone poem Black, Brown and Beige fall into your thoughts today.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:42am Brian in UK:

@Martinbomb, is that Viv Stanshall's boggly eyes in your avatar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

Tristano was a gas, Martinibomb. And hugely influential.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
A vital work, but not quite in this wheelhouse, in my estimation.
  10:43am Martinibomb:

Also a great teacher! And the first to record a studio jazz improv
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

Some of the musicians in the band here: Bud Shank, Art Pepper, Maynard Ferguson...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

I could dance to this for sure.
  10:52am Listener Gregory:

Doug, I really don't advise that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

This is like West Side Story on shrooms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

From Wikipedia:

"Tristano's 1953 recording "Descent into the Maelstrom" was another innovation. It was a musical portrayal of Edgar Allan Poe's story of the same title, and was an improvised solo piano piece that used multitracking and had no preconceived harmonic structure, being based instead on the development of motifs. Its atonality anticipated the much later work of pianists such as Cecil Taylor and Borah Bergman."
  10:59am Martinibomb:

Oh that's right he was one of the first people to use multitrack
Avatar 🥁 11:00am βrian:

Doug, you're going to be levied a Dissonance Footprint Tax.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:00am Granny Spicy Tuna:

what a beautiful maelstrom
  11:00am Martinibomb:

I think with Turkish Mambo each of the notes his left hand fingers play is in a different time signature so you phasing effect.. forget the technical term right now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

I ascent, Granny Spice Tuna!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

@Martinibomb
Lennie was a man generations ahead of his time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

Say it with me everybody...

Dissonance Footprint Tax was the name of my first band in high school.
  11:02am Martinibomb:

I'm glad you appreciate him the way I do. I feel like people kinda forgot about him or something. No one ever plays him on the "Jazz station"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

Barney Kessel on guitar here.
  11:02am Listener Gregory:

I missed your intro to these sets, Doug. Is it a coincidence that so many of these people were West Coast musicians?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am chresti:

That's be cause I'm on the West coast
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:04am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Doug, i think i was in your first band. it's a blurry maelstrom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
I hadn't mentioned it, but a number of these fellers headed to L.A. to write for film and later television.
  11:05am Listener Gregory:

@chresti That is an excellent reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am chresti:

:)
  11:06am Listener Gregory:

Doug, true, but I also think that there's some connection between this music and the cool jazz tradition out west. Maybe more of an interest in composition?

Hi. Is this going to be on the test?

(Ethan Iverson wrote up Descent into the Maelstrom for the old D:O blog: destination-out.com...)
  11:16am Listener Gregory:

Another figure in this category is Patrick Williams, who did a lot of TV composing, but also some large group jazz recordings, like An American Concerto (1981) w/Phil Woods and the London Symphony Orchestra.
  11:18am Martinibomb:

@Jeff thanks for the link!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Patrick Williams is new to me.
  11:22am Listener Gregory:

Anyone remember the Claude Bolling suites for flute and jazz trio or various instruments and orchestra? That was the unfortunate logical conclusion to this tradition.
  11:22am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, Williams probably wrote music for three of your favorite TV shows as a kid.
  11:23am holland oats:

goshdarnit it's friday and i missed most of the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

This Gunther Schuller piece was conducted by one of the great genius modernist innovators, George Russell. It is a pathetic embarrassment that I have not included Russell in this mix. Honestly, I feel Russell operated at a level ABOVE all this. More pioneering and less "dabbling in avant gardism" that some of what I have played today could be characterized as.
