Early Ex is weird to me, as I came into them rather late in the game. I am particularly fond of that album they did with saxophonist Getachew Mekuria.

TDK60: I only just recently watched that on the WFMU Roku app. It was pretty incredible. Awesome you were there live.
Avatar 7:16pm
TDK60:

Rich, way back when, the Ex started a fairly typical sounding hardcore punk band (1981ish?) and eventually started getting more and more original; artsy-punk with African influence, and of course their anarchist lyrics.

I've only heard bits of their earliest stuff and they reminded me quite a bit of Crass, who I really liked at the time, but for some reason, never got into them until the last decade or so. I am pretty sure due to someone on WFMU playing them.
Avatar 7:21pm
TDK60:

I'm not super up on early hardcore punk. But I think Crass had a huge influence, they were even around a few years before hardcore really got going. I figure shared politix was a feature, from Crass to the Ex, and other bands over in Nederlands.
Avatar 7:23pm
hyde:

i love Crass. i have a bunch of those early singles and Feeding of the 5000 (which is great)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm
Rich in Washington:

Crass was fantastic. I love some of the Dada aspects to their work. For all the scorn they garnered back in the day, they were included in the infamous Nurse With Wound list, ferchrissake!

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

WFMU...will you marry me??
Avatar 7:31pm
TDK60:

Crass was a whole package, early proponents of Do It Yourself, political commitment. They revived the "peace" sign (really the Nuclear Disarmanent symbol. And they inspired countless other punk bands/scenes with a conscience. And they did draw a connection between the hippies and punks in the more political-protest side of the countercultures. So ends my essay.

This Scrabbling at the Lock is a friggin' great album. Some of the best rock cello you'll ever hear, from Tom Cora. And this album won best Dutch album of that year!
