Random q: did Miles ever record any duets? Can't think of any offhand...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:13am
doctorjazz:

For our to see Andy Statman ,last night (at Chabad Temple in Jersey). Interesting to be at a concert with mostly orthodox audience (though I guess it makes sense). Anyway, Statman has just gotten better on his over time (seen him a few times but not in a while). I used to feel like his clarinet playing while fine ,wasn't quite as virtuosic as his mandolin playing.no such gap last night, he was great on both (and he did pull out the mandolin and play a set of bluegrass in the middle of his klezmer stuff).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am
Jeff Golick:

Very cool, @doc. He was well received there? Was audience segregated by sex?
  10:17am
Listener Gregory:

Interesting question, Jeff. No, I don't think there are any recorded duets. Can't even think of solos without a full rhythm section. Maybe in Tutu or one of the other late albums?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am
Jeff Golick:

@LG: that's where my knowledge sort of runs out, post-1980...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:19am
doctorjazz:

(I also have the New Directions album sitting on my vinyl shelf great to hear it again. I believe these were Jack DeJohnette albums, with Special Edition following, which were great) .
  10:23am
Listener Gregory:

I think duets became more popular in the 60s avant-garde, when musicians didn't feel the need for rhythmic and harmonic anchors.
  10:23am
Listener Gregory:

It almost sounds like I know what I'm talking about there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am
Jeff Golick:

I bought it, @LG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am
Jeff Golick:

@doc: I like those Special Edition albums, but think I'm drawn more to Lester and the New Directions crew.
  10:27am
Listener Gregory:

New Directions Live in Europe is also a great album, although with much of the same repertoire as the studio version, I think.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:29am
doctorjazz:

Jeff ,the audience was receptive (though polite much of the time ), but he got a nice ovation). The rabbi, long dark bearded, kept asking how we heard about the concert (the room was packed, though it wasn't huge). And, no, it was mixed seating, no sex segregation (Chabad, from what I understand, wants to bring "errant Jews" back to the fold, but is very gentle and non pressured in how they go about it. No proselytizing last night, but I'd guess they consider just getting folks into the door doing something they enjoy that is Jewish - themed is a good 1st step).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:31am
doctorjazz:

LG, I think your right , duets (and solo horns ) were much more common by the 70s than I know of before free jazz became a thing .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am
Jeff Golick:

Ah, cool. Thanks for that, @doc.

@LG: you are correct about that Live record; also came in that ECM AEC box set.
  10:32am
Listener Gregory:

New Directions came in the AEC set???? Yikes.
