Spotting Irwin's name in the liner notes of various oddball comps in the '90s (as well as Songs in the Key of Z) is what brought me to WFMU in the first place :)

@LindaLee: As someone who first discovered WFMU in 1992 when I moved to my own place in Park Slope when I was younger, I can tell you there definitely was exotica on the main station then. But I wasn’t into it.

Then I stopped listening to WFMU about 1995 when I moved away and “streaming” the RealAudio stream meant tying up my phone line with a 56k modem connection and started listening again around 2014 or so.

Anyway… Age!

I enjoyed the earlier comments about people finding WFMU. I came to WFMU intentionally. Or at least I knew there was something better out there and went searching for it. At 54, I caught the tail end of the early FM years as a kid only to see the individuality of it die.
In the early 2000s, my local independent record shops were pretty much gone. Idol and those *&$#ing talent shows were the thing. Pandora and other recommendation streaming services were hitting their stride. It just felt like a dark time… I started listening to college streams and looked for new ones every day (no, this one’s not right , let me try another). I stumbled onto Irwin’s program one day in 2012 and serendipitously, he was playing an old recording of WFMU from the 70’s. It reminded me of an old station WGTB (Georgetown University) way back in the 70’s where you heard anything and everything before the Jesuit owners probably got tired of hearing djs doing bong hits on air. After Irwin, I discovered Ken, wow. Then all of the other wonderful DJs. Every time I tune in, it’s like walking into a record shop where someone’s putting a great record on the turntable and people are browsing and talking about the artists and sharing. Thanks Joe and Happy Birthday!
