Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm

apparently part of the strategy in choosing this time of year for part of the fairy tale was based on the 3 day period around the solstice that the sun does not appear to be rising any higher in the sky; and then (back in the day) it is suddenly apparent that it is in fact coming back and the people are Thankful.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm

Settlers of Catan is a modern classic as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
coelacanth∅:

i think i played 99 with friends, in my 20s.

we got clue and trivial pursuit a little later on. before those came (which i loved) we had these marathon games of monopoly. my parents didn't utilize certain rules so that it was easier to not go bankrupt. often my younger sister would fall asleep in her chair long before the rest of us and the game would end when we were all too exhausted to continue. my mom would add up the assets in the morning to see who won.

we had 2 (or 3) very beautiful mahjong sets in the house, which we pulled out and looked at every once in a while. my mother said she knew how to play but it was too complicated to teach us.
but then, she also said there was some fat guy who somehow slid in and out of every person's home via fireplace chimney at precisely midnight once/year.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
coelacanth∅:

Franco good luck. it'll be fun if you find 'em.
... something i started to do when i was maybe 9-10 and it got away from me later on, was to write down every record i got as i got them- to chronicle my evolution as a music listener...which i'd find interesting now as i sometimes doubt my memory's accuracy. also to help remember who gave me what if they were gifts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
David D:

Doctorjazz: That is sad, can she be in touch from the ship? The cruise sounds exciting otherwise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
David D:

Yes, good luck, Franco, too much moving has meant losing quite a few records and CDs along the way for me as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15pm
coelacanth∅:

oh no,dr. ... but maybe she will.
my father fooled us all over and over for 3-4 years, but it wasn't until a week ago that his irresponsible indulgences' effects on his body outweighed his stubbornness.

this Sherap Dorjee is beautiful

Coel, I was thinking photo op for later tonight after dinner. I found one - Time Has Come Today by The Chambers Brothers, but I can't find Disraeli Gears by Cream. I should have started earlier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
David D:

coelacanth∅: Yes, that was a Tibetan kovo lute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
coelacanth∅:

ah Great album that chambers brothers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
coelacanth∅:

i knew she was/is tibetan by her name, Sherap; never heard of the kovo lute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm
David D:

There are so many different types of lute-like instruments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
Sem:

Great board, reading is wonderful. Busy cooking but listening in closely.

Scallops, in case you were wondering...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
David D:

Sounds good Sem, fresh from the region?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
Sem:

Yes, David, this part of Nova Scotia is a lobster and scallop hot spot.
The Chinese get most of everything caught here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm
David D:

Funny, I think the scallops you get here are often from Asia, although I may be mistaken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
David D:

Here being Germany, of course.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm

There has not been abalone in Cali in a long time. At least one's that are legal. My dad use to pry them off the rocks with a screw driver and fill gunny sacks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
coelacanth∅:

yes David asia and europe are 1 continent. no doubt the obvious lie was created for political reasons. (as are the maps that most people in the northern hemisphere still use that show the southern hemisphere land masses to be much smaller than they are)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm
David D:

Yes, it all goes back to the tripartite division of the known world into Europe, Asia, and Africa. I suppose it was always something of a cultural division after all.
  5:49pm
Sem:

OK, I've OD'ed on Vitamin D by now, I am sure. Thanks for the sunny tunes, David. Hope to see you and all this time next week, sunny or not. Ciao for now.

It's the Disney Fantasy-goes to islands in the Caribbean, Eastern and WEstern, sometimes Mexico as well. They're performing Aladdin and some other Disney stuff.

Lotta Leipzig talk on the Bach Fest. I keep doing doubletakes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm

Doug, hard to talk about Bach without Leipzig, or vice versa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm

hey UM
(that i thought i posted a while ago!)

are their other famous composers or modern musicians that have a leipzig history? just curious.
  9:46pm

I am loving the David Fest from Leipzig. Thank you so much for giving the day s soundtrack!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm

Doug: It is my absolute pleasure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
Uncle Michael:

hey, Coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
David D:

Coel: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is the first to come to mind. There is a lot of music happening all the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm
coelacanth∅:

i did get the impression somewhere along the way that leipzig was a musical hot spot, of some sort. never got into Mendelssohn but i'm also fairly ignorant to his work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
coelacanth∅:

you still haven't played "lazy old sun" by the kinks!
Avatar 9:55pm

also a dear friend of mine and the best free jazz saxophonist i know is in leipzig, great bruno angeloni.

Heading home tomorrow, Doc.
Avatar 10:04pm

i tried to make him listen to this radio show but he likes to sleep early and if he doesnt he runs our locl soup kitchen here in the east of leipzig. so if you are open for that, you could come there on a wednesday evening for some real italian minestrone cooked by the man himself.
Avatar 10:05pm
monkeyz:

i have this theory that good musicians are also good cooks and vice versa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm
David D:

Sounds good, Monkeyz, is that Atari?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
coelacanth∅:

i knew an amazing free jazz saxophonist, who unfortunately for the rest of us left his body a few years ago; but i wonder if he played in leipzig. he was in eurasia a lot, as all free jazz players from the states have to be if they want to make a living by music.

no its a place called löffelstube in the northern part of the idastraße. you will find a candle light burning at the entrance of a flat roof building between two "normal" houses from ca. 19.00 till midnight. food is often gone by 9 latest so better come early.
