Good evening and merry Xmas to all Woofmooers around the world from West Yorkshire, UK. Let 2019 be the year that things start to turn around and the darkness, cynicism and hopelessness of the past few years give way to optimism, hope, inclusivity and positive action.

Mark Hurst:

@ultradamno - so many high-profile people have publicly announced recently that they're leaving Facebook. Walt Mossberg, Cher, who else.. seems like about a dozen in the past week. In my opinion it's not a question of *should* we delete Facebook (of course we should) but whether people are in a position to do so (some can't, but many can)...
  6:14pm
River:

@TDC70 I like NYC a lot, but I can't understand why y'all went with saying 'New York State' rather than 'New Yorkshire', which would be much more consistent.

Lovely music. I'm reminded of a song called "No L" by Jeffrey Lewis, about the upcoming no L train in NYC. But it's not techmology driven. -- related to Xerox, I miss the smell of the Gestetner machine.

Most Techtons have probably already heard this (because really, who doesn't subscribe to and listen to every episode of the essential "Stay Tuned with Preet"?), but in case any of y'all missed it – the episode "Does Silicon Valley Have a Conscience? (with Kara Swisher)" seemed right in the Techtonic wheelhouse.

www.npr.org...

Apologies if it's already been mentioned ; I'm unable to listen live this evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
melinda:

I did 23andme for health reasons, after long consideration. My sister had already done it for ancestry purposes, so the cat was out of the bag. Or the horse had left the barn, whatever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't know how much proof of id. they required but when my sister bought them she had to tell them who each kit was for before they'd send them.
  6:33pm
River:

@Coelacanth That's pretty screwed up. What the hell business is it of theirs? Hmph. I really want to do one, but not if it means essentially giving my DNA to the police.
Avatar 6:34pm
annie:

my son did one of them.....his grandfather beat him to it by compiling a complete family tree back to the mid 1600s... white as toast. i don't trust those tests mainly because there is no disclosure on how they can use the data. and consider the crispr technology.. nope.. not me

Go home, inflatable Santa, you're drunk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm

There's an article out there somewhere on how to do 23andme anonymously, but it seemed like a lot of work and I didn't like the prospect of explaining to people at work why I was having something shipped to me there under a fake name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm
coelacanth∅:

TDK i think that's how the sister felt!

@annie my sister has been doing genealogy for years and the test confirmed that we too are white as toast, except for 0.5% South Asian, which is interesting. But no big surprises, and their estimates for timelines were off.

@chresti: Because the overarching issue is not a Facebook issue. The issue is big data, data collection and the ease of correlating data in the digital age. The laws haven’t caught up to this new tech, but Facebook, Google and Apple could stop collecting data right now and the issue still remains.
