The gaseous material is flowing from a large hole in the sun's atmosphere. This is a long-lasting hole that has lashed Earth with solar wind about once a month since July. The last time it happened on Nov. 4th, auroras were sighted in US states including Wyoming, Montana, Iowa, Washington, North Dakota and, of course, Alaska. It could happen again this weekend. "

Hey Gary! (And others…) Out here in deeper, non-hipster Brooklyn I have noticed something weird: Lots of small businesses are suddenly removing the signs off of their stores. In Sunset Park and Bay Ridge I counted about 25+. Seems crazy! Some local council people are investigating, but it seems to be some kind of department of buildings effort that is hitting businesses all over non-hip NYC.

FWIW, they are pulling down the signs because they don’t have a DOB permit and might be fined as much as $5,000 to keep the sign. This seems like a very weird push against small businesses in immigrant neighborhoods, thus my posting this here.

Some insight here on Twitter. twitter.com...

Well, shit, Jake, that's sucks more then usual. I need to ask around (used to work for City Planning, and am on good terms w/ my retired boss).
  8:44pm
JakeGould:

@Gary: Exactly. The businesses are still there, but this seems crazy. Like some sudden “small business tax” for not having a sign. And if you ask me, it seems like some tactic too push businesses out of neighborhoods that might be ripe for “development” (aka: gentrification). If I noticed 25+ that removed that sign that means they did so to dodge fine. How many businesses are just paying it and not fighting? And why now in NYC? It seems crazy.

So, what's Eric Adam's story (don't know scheisse about him)? It has to go through him.
  8:46pm
JakeGould:

FWIW, something similar happened in East New York when rezoning of the neighborhood was being discussed. But this is weird because it is literally all over NYC. Take a stroll down 5th Avenue in Sunset Park from 59th Street to 39th Street and you can spot this happening very easily.

Also reports of similar stuff in Borough Park.

www.kingscountypolitics.com...
  8:48pm
JakeGould:

@NGH: Appreciate your insight if you have any, but I am not an expert. Just a neighbor noticing this. All articles state 311 gets a complaint and then the DOB investigates. But how many people are calling 311 just to complain about store signs? Many that have been up for decades?

@NGH: Well, I appreciate your insight, but it is all sounding like armchair gossip to me. So thanks, but… Sorry.

As I said initially, I am just posting this here just in case others in NYC notice a similar pattern in their neighborhood so they can be aware that this is a weird thing happening across NYC it seems and not just some random neighborhood thing.

  9:05pm
JakeGould:

@TDK60: Yeah, but what you describe is just normal/generic priced out gentrification. That’s nothing special even though it is annoying. What I am talking about is businesses that are still in business, are not going out of business, but are suddenly being “fined” for signs they have for decades and removing them to avoid these fines. And it all started in the past few months.

@TDK60: Errr, nope. You are changing the topic. The issue here is the DOB is suddenly jumping on small businesses with crazy fines ALL OVER THE CITY. It’s utterly not the same thing. The source of this happening is not clear. That is extremely creepy and weird.

First, forgive me Gary…

@TDK60: “I can change the topic if I choose.” You are warping the core of what I am posting and making it seem (frankly) like some generic “The city is changing…” thing. This is not what I posted and not the intent. Read the links I posted—and possibly the details I have posted—before you warp someone else’s words.

Maybe “changing the topic” is the wrong words. Maybe “warping what IO said” is more accurate. You have no right to do that and not be called out on that. Simple.

And not to belabor the point, but this show seems to thrive on the music of these immigrant neighborhoods. Thus my posting this here. If your main experience in NYC is living in Greenwich Village and taking the 1/2/3 train to the Upper West Side you really have no clue what happens in the rest of this city or how immigrants neighborhoods are bullied like this.

So anyway, loved the music tonight!

As I said, I hadn't noticed that yet, myself, and will keep my eyes open for it in my travels around the various boroughs. (You don't know where I live or where I go.)

@Ike: armchair gossip aside, DOB is an arm of the moneyed class (as is most Depts I interacted w/, DEP seemed to be less prone). One of the reasons (besides all the other mierde that happened to me) I left, was b/c the whole city was becoming whitewashed. It took me a while to find a funky town I could groove to and find a decent job.

Sweet Leaf, new to me, and digdug (Great 70s British psyche I missed, how does that happen!???)
