Hey PRB! That seems to be the conventional wisdom.

Why do you suppose so much rudimentary knowledge of other languages starts and stops with profanity? Universal feeling?

In my experience, the first steps toward new language acquisition involve ordering beer.

NYC gave me the Yiddish lexicon, unfortunately, no here really knows Yiddish.

I picked up the Monk complete Riverside LP box on a close-out at Tower Records, probably early '90s. Same for the complete Bill Evans Riverside LPs.

I have to admit, Bill Evans was the first jazz I got into (when I was 16). I imagined it was what NYC felt like on a rainy night in the 60s.

Dean:

My experience echoes yours, northguineahills. I heard Evans' "Peace Piece" on the radio in my mid- to late-teens, ran out and bought The Bill Evans Album (which doesn't in fact include "Peace Piece"). Been enjoying him every since. Another jazz LP I simply had to have after hearing it on radio was Jack Wilkins' Red Clay. Special ordered it from the record store where I'd worked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Passaic River Blues:

Not too long ago, I read the 33 1/3-Bloomsbury book about "Bitches Brew" by Greg Gella, the Brooklyn Rail's music editor. It's a short, excellent examination of the recording and unorthodox editing of the album. Sent me on a McLaughlin and Zawinul/Shorter/Weather Report tailspin, which was awesome.

@NGH: That's kind of what Evans sounds to me, too. A rain-cooled night in Manhattan of the mind.
  1:47pm
Dean:

Leo Smith's Yo Miles with Henry Kaiser is a fun updating of electric Miles.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm

It's interesting, the first track the rhythm section is Percy Heath and Ed Blackwell, and on this one it's Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell, and as much as I dig Charlie, I think Heath was really working it out

Really loving the show today--I have to get me some more Sonny Rollins. The only older Sonny I have is the Village Vanguard stuff--which is fantastic, but you're playing some of the great studio stuff I HAVE to have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm
Funky16Corners:

Thanks Mark! Are you talking about the trio stuff? I love those records.
  2:36pm
Mark R:

Love the early Freddie Hubbard albums, too. Maybe you're gonna play something from "Hub Tones"! Freddie Also played on some great Blue Note albums by Eric Dolphy and Grachan Moncur III.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm
Funky16Corners:

I am indeed! Closing the show with a Hub Tones track!
  2:39pm
Mark R:

Nice, not that I'd tell you what to play--you have a very good handle on that, indeed. And yes, I was talking about the Sonny Rollins trio stuff, which, believe it or not, was the very first album ever recorded at the Village Vanguard. I guess Max Gordon was upset that he was losing two tables right by the stage for the recording equipment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
Funky16Corners:

Those sessions are so great. The idea of a sax-led trio is so cool
  2:46pm
Dean:

I see a Stan Getz album with tracks recorded at the VV in June '57, five months before the Rollins record. Difference is the Getz was only partly recorded there, and it's an Italian issue, which likely means it's a bootleg: https://www.discogs.com/Stan-Getz-Quartet-Live-At-The-Village-Vanguard/release/5812780
