I read Veloso's memoir last year, and his discussions of his exile from Brazil beginning in 1969 and his time spent in Paris and London were some of the best passages. Veloso also discussed "Domingo" and his friendship with Costa, whom he rightly regards as a genius and supremely talented.

Hopefully they'll find a safer place. My friend in Brazil is fleeing to Portugal sadly.

Since I am in Turkey Bulent Ersoy would be a good banned artist. She is a trans woman got her re-assignment surgery done between coups in the 70s I want to say and was banned and kicked out of the country despite being a fairly big artist. Though that was all taken back and she tours and makes music there now. Though the situation is not really all that much better than it was sadly.

As soon as I see the phrase "left wing social justice", I know I am hearing from someone who is deeply invested in his fantasies of what "left wing" is. @Cecile I tried using Duolingo before I went the first time, but I ended up getting really good at the Duolingo app. Not so much actually speaking Turkish. (I did really learn the Turkish word for turtle.)

@tneeld: Spanish, read german, read japanese (in the latin alphabet). Ok in Portuguese. Decent in French (Quebecois). Being a native English speaker, you'd think I'd master it by now. Tons of phrases in mostly European languages.

Duolingo is good for getting your feet wet. In German, I really found success with the book, Fluent Forever, the app LingQ and speaking with native speakers on websites like italki, Conversation Exchange and Tandem. When I want to get serious, I'll repeat the process for Turkish.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm

Duolingo needs a text I find from what I've seen of it. It will teach you grammar up to like intermediate level and it does it well, but its not...Explicit? It just assumes you'll pick things up but its more about recognition then understanding. . Turks when you come to turkey are really happy to sit and drink tea and listen to shaky turkish (in general)

@tneeld: Turkish is hard. Outside a few phrases, I haven't cracked it, but I'm still trying....(Outside of Finnish and Hungarian, most Indo-European languages make sense little bit to English speakers, heck, even Persian and Hindi make more sense to me).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm

I am looking into the concept of Childhood in Early-Modern Ottoman thought. So, rather than focusing on pederasty which has been sadly the norm, broadening things to see how children are used in stories, how they are mentioned in narratives/used in narratives and I am trying to build a skeleton on which others can build on because my field has not done much of anything with history of childhood.
