Favoriting October 31, 2018: The Playlist without a Station- Remembering Hurricane Sandy

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

This week: Hell or High Water. A Look back on the time when a hurricane knocked WFMU off the air… but not the messageboard!

Twelve years ago Hurricane Superstorm Sandy battered the East Coast and the WFMU studios in Jersey City, NJ. WFMU was knocked off the air for almost a week, but dedication, ingenuity and creativity prevailed as listeners tuned into events on the WFMU.org message boards. In the meantime several DJ’s were able to set up remote studios to bring the station back to life. Tune in as the gIRLs on Fire recounts those events with exclusive interviews with Ken Freedman, Clay Pigeon, Therese, Dan Bodah, Doug Schulkind Jeff Moore and Scott Williams.

A timeline of events by WFMU Messageboards:

Therese Playlist from the eve of the storm on Oct 29th from 12am - 10:30am.

Clay Pigeon’s marathon community playlist from 11pm on Oct 29th - 9am Oct 30th!

Doug Shulkind’s playlist from studio “P” in Pittsburg on Oct 30th from 12pm - 5pm.

Dan Bodah’s playlist from his Brooklyn studio Oct 30th from 6pm - 9pm.

Irwin’s playlist from Ken’s kitchen in Hoboken on Oct 31st from 1:30pm - 6pm.

Ken’s Silent playlist from 10/29 12pm-4pm.

Ken’s State of the Station broadcast from 11/7.

Ken’s first show on the airwaves on 11/9.

Scott’s playlist from 11/5 when we return to the station with electricity!

Just wondering.... Heard on the radio this AM that in some places, people still haven't recovered from Sandy. Which makes me wonder - seriously - how long it will take for Puerto Rico to recover from Maria......

I couldn't listen then because I had no electricity in the house in the Bronx, and no car so no car radio.

Pre-emptively shutting down is a logical, smart approach. It is what hospitals ideally do. The Manhattan VA hospital did this for Sandy; Bellevue and NYU Hospital, further up First Avenue did not, and had near disasters.
  7:22pm
Listener Robert:

Trick or Treat on Astor Ave. was spooky, in that a block north of us they never lost power, so the kids would parade onto our block with flashlights, coming around the dark half of a block to get back to Trick or Treating in the other half.

I kinda feel it is my duty as a WFMU listener to stay tuned around the clock to make sure everyone is alright at the station. (Not that that's of any real help, but...) Right now am reduced to checking streams every so often, between naps

Thanks, Mr. Moore. I'm looking at the Wikipedia entry for Icecast now.

I guess it shouldn't be hard conceptually, in that AIUI what comes from a running disk now is a type of packets, giving any source of packets as an address should be similar.

WFMU is currently off the air, being in a power cut in Jersey City. Check the WFMU frontpage for updates. The WFMU servers are far from NY/NJ so this playlist is active. Clay likely has no power himself, and is at the station waiting for it to come back.
