@coel: Fugu! (blowfish)

JtotheK:

going to have to dig out this tjader LP this weekend. some other show spun a track from it this week. (duane, maybe?)
  10:11pm
Dean:

Funny you mention large zucchini. I have a couple here--not monumentally huge, but slightly overweight--and I'm uncertain about how to use them. Usually, I just simmer them slowly in olive oil and add blue cheese, but these would make large coins. I might just scrape one of them into meatballs, add it to ground turkey and herbs along with bread crumbs, broil them for several minutes, and simmer them in tomato sauce.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
coelacanth∅:

that reminds me of a Ken Nordine piece describing a guy who made okarinas out of dead animals, like fish

Never made zucchini pasta before, but I've had it. Not a bad idea...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
coelacanth∅:

a friend once asked me if she could grow zucchini in my garden i said yes and it bore many fruit that got huge. she only took a few and i'm not a big fan so i developed a trade situation with a food truck couple that made delicious zucchini bread with it.

Love that Tjader early '70s electric Latin jazz period

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Little Danny:

Doc! I just paged you with some Tjader, and then some Hibbert
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
coelacanth∅:

wise people,your parents?
i don't need to try it. i'd bet it's one of those things that people have turned into a "delicacy" because of rarity or in this case also the exclusivity of a club of those willing to risk their lives for the sake of bragging about trying fugu; but it's not anything special, taste-wise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
coelacanth∅:

(like caviar, which everyone knows is just salty and fishy, but it's expensive so therefore delicious!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
melinda:

Caviar has always sounded just gross to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Uncle Michael:

Hello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
doctorjazz:

John Sébastian harmonica 45! Very cool! Saw him play with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band not too long ago, fun show
  10:30pm
Dean:

There's that, @coel, for sure, but the same situation obtains wrt hot sauces. Yet I've had extremely hot sauces that are really luscious. The intensity contributes to both the psychological and the gustatory effects, but then no human assessment of experience is free of psychological bias.
  10:32pm
Dean:

E.g., Bigfat's 808: http://www.bigfatshotsauce.com/8o8-naga-jolokia-hot-sauce-out-of-stock/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
coelacanth∅:

it's really not great, melinda, and i love fish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
Uncle Michael:

The difference between good caviar and commodity "caviar" is...great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
coelacanth∅:

Dean i used to think if it's extremely hot hot sauce it would be less flavorful but i've heard that some accomplish both. i haven't tried any yet that do - but i believe it.
Avatar 10:36pm
northguineahills:

@Dean: I don't bhut jolokia hot sauce. I have about 30 bhut jolokia peppers, and I can barely get through 1 per week. (awesome in small amounts).
  10:37pm
Dean:

We're seeing bullshit about sloppily prepared burgers here in the Bay Area, as if the nonchalance itself rendered the burger better. Some distinctions (hmm, reminds me to read Bourdieu) are genuine, others all about marketing and hipness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
coelacanth∅:

Uncle M, i'll buy that. (well i probably can't afford it, but...)
so, like with feta then
  10:38pm
Dean:

Bigfat's is good, very good. The 808 is smoky (in addition to hot), and therefore less amenable to a wide variety of dishes, but the 708 is only less hot--and it's a mutha--but citrusy, and wonderful on a lot of things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
doctorjazz:

Believe I'm on the stream (free jazz sax)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
melinda:

I have moderate tolerance for hot sauces, and have read conflicting info on whether or not one can increase tolerance. When it's too painful you can't appreciate nuance of flavor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
coelacanth∅:

uhhh stream on! good free saxophone but where are you Danny?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Uncle Michael:

Yeah...kind of. Good caviar is just salty enough and not soterribly fishy...but also nutty and buttery. So like with cheese if one obvious attribute overwhelms the possibility of others...then meh. As with hot sauce, too.
Avatar 10:40pm
northguineahills:

@cole: I'm more for the sake (rice wine) of bragging.

What UM said, good caviar is awesome (I put it on crackers or a mild cheese). Crappy caviar is "meh", but I love fish eggs. My favorites are from Russ & Daughters.
  10:42pm
Dean:

My favorite dish in town is matrimonios: grilled anchovies on crostini with a dollop of aioli. It's served at a restaurant next door to Chez Panisse. It's fishy as hell, and garlicky as hell. Utter bliss. I want it for breakfast every day.
Avatar 10:42pm
northguineahills:

(growing up in Japan will allow you to develop a taste for fish eggs).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm

Danny still no you!
Avatar 10:43pm

Sounds awesome, Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm

I believe that track was from Wildflowers, for those interested, have the LP somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
Uncle Michael:

I like marinated white anchovies on crostini with olive-loil pan-roasted and chilled red, yellow and orange bell pepper strips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Uncle Michael:

with minced parsley and garlic olive oil...I should add
  10:46pm
Dean:

Truly, it is. Rarely am I blown away by the cooking in these parts. SF and the Bay Area are absurdly overrated. But matrimonios at Cesar? Just about perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Little Danny:

Oh fucking hell. I just did a long mic set. Oblivious. Sorry folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm

One of my daily refrains is, "Fuck the internet" (by which I mean the web and its attendant "tools" and "apps" and "plugins" and "add-ons" and such). The morons who "invented" this crap deserve our disdain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm

thanks for sticking around errbody!
  10:52pm

Another daily refrain is, "I'm tired."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm

one of mine is "oh fuck, i have to get out of bed."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm

Been vibe deprived since the beginning of the show ahhh, that feels much better !
  11:20pm
Dean:

I pitched in this evening, despite telling Evan at Explorers Room that I'd contribute next week. (And I will.) Others?

Vibes, yes. I had a hard time remembering yesterday Walt Dickerson's name, whose record with Sun Ra is one of my desert island must-haves. The other is Tragicomedia's Anna Magdalena Notebook.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
Little Danny:

Ah, Dean, you're the greatest. My behind-the-scenes view isn't accessible at the moment, but I'll get you properly thanked on the air when I can see the numbers
  11:24pm

No need for "proper" thanks, none at all.

Dean! This is your shot! Are you going to take it?

I have reasonable dreams of coming to JC and helping out for a week. My dreams might be under performing, but I still like them.
  11:28pm
Dean:

Oh, yeah. I was thinking of the later (?) one, Visions, from 1978.
  11:30pm
Dean:

1965? Way before Visions!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm

OK, just ordered the Dickerson LP from Discogs, sheesh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
doctorjazz:

That took it all out of me Z gonna crash now...
  11:38pm
Dean:

Visions, doctorjazz? You won't be disappointed. I have four copies: a cassette from a friend in Connecticut, a CD-R from the friend in CT, the reissue CD with extra tracks, and the LP. I first heard it in Quebec, at the apartment of an attendee at Victo one year. I was stricken. He also played for us John Carter's Castles of Ghana, which I also adore.
