(Moravia-Silesia was also its own republic before the war, afterwards it was absorbed by the Czech Republic of the Czechoslovak Federation.) Slovakian as a language wasn't formalized until the interwar period. It was considered a peasant's language. Czech was formalized in the early 19th c w/ the rise of nationalism and looked back to medieval Slavic writing, which is why the grammar and vocabulary is considered archaic to linguists and other Slavs, while most other Slavic languages (save Russian influenced ones) have a more modern feel to them.

i used to see cheap cassette tapes in chinatown in the 80s and never bought one, figuring they were probably chinese pop radio crap...but i learned a few key phrases to look for & thought one day i'd try one; but the next time i saw them there they'd at least doubled in price.
i guess they realised they could screw the gweilos and the chinese would know to ask for a lower price.
