So if the "outer" digital encoding degrades, the error correction should just fail, and the bad samples should just get skipped.

I guess. I don't know. I DO know that one of my aforementioned Shimmy releases has what looks like holes in the foil component. I have no idea how that can happen. The plastic is otherwise unmarked.
