A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Also, Picasso, Miro, and tons of others are better artists than Robert Crumb. His main level of fame comes from applying that level of skill to comics. Past that, I’m not the only one who doesn’t worship at his inkwell. Moebius (Jean Giraud) is amazing but nobody has made him some art diety.

Once I got past prejudices others put in my head, I realized in the great scheme of things there are tons of other artists I was never exposed to that are as good or better than “underground” crap.
And yes, there are definitely some great comic artists out there. No doubt. But I’m personally tired of the incredible self-importance of that world.

Trolling around the internet looking for drawings reveals there are a great number of fantastic artists out there - I say, this is not horse race.

Also, really love her reinterpretation of Jean Craighead George and "My Side of the Mountain": "Over the decades since I first found the books to be rollicking adventure stories, they’ve become chilling horror stories of lonely children lost and desperate to survive in unforgiving wilderness."
MSotM was probably my favorite book from childhood but, I suspect, something that would prove upon re-reading to be less an adventure tale than one of loneliness and alienation, which, again, is fine by me.
melinda:
@Henry great list. The Twisted Sisters anthology was one of my first intros to indie comics. I recently read Mimi Pond's book The Customer is Always Right, another excellent one. Somewhat autobiographical.

Speaking of old books by dead people :-) !! Finishing Mary Barton, about to start Willy O'Reilly and his Dear Cooleen Bawn, 1855, by William Carleton whoever that was bless him. I'd love a few recommendations from fellow listeners of the more obscurantist sleepers of this era--anybody?

And I LOVE Orson Welles, but even he couldn't make Rochester more than a malignant blackhole of morbidity and self-pity. Still, now I want to watch "Othello" or "F Is for Fake".
