A live, improvised sound collage experiment, going back 28 years, weaving mesmerizing new soundscapes from found and collected materials right in the present moment.
Pop music, speeches, live phone calls and spontaneous monologues become ambient loopy layered threads riding the liminal spaces between waking and dreaming. [On hiatus.] (Visit homepage.)

A new show? I guess that means there's a great show tonight that I didn't notice

fred, I did it just to let you know to look for local great shows tonight

Avatar 5:17pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Welcome, Bas! When are you leaving?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm fred:

I have an health issue today that would make a bad idea to know where beer is available and glass might get broken, so I'd better stay here
Avatar 5:18pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Obligatory observation: The archived version (linked in smaller text) sounds a lot better than this 128k live stream. You'd have to seek ahead to 18 mins into it to be present
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Rich in Washington:

I love KRob's OTE shows. I love Wobbly's, too, but they're both distinctively different, each one a different direction of where Don Joyce was headed.
Avatar 5:19pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Rich Agreed, really different and really great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Bas NL:

Leaving is such a beautiful thing on trees. Perpetual future and timber.
Avatar 5:20pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I like the Star Trek samples better in here though than where they were on Over the Edge
Avatar 5:20pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Bas Oh it's like you already heard the end of this show when I'll leave your tree
  5:29pm possibilitywaves:

I feel that I am close to starting to explore Negativland; it has been hard to wait!
Avatar 5:30pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The Beatles are awfully scary right now
Avatar 5:31pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

It's not really Negativland, it's Over the Edge, and Over the Edge isn't really Over the Edge anymore. So!
Avatar 5:32pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

(Welcome back, possibilitywaves! You will leave)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm Rich in Washington:

It's Over the Edge Presents...
I can't believe the didn't name it Over The Edge and Friends, like when the Carol Burnett show went into syndication.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Rich in Washington:

I also noticed in the post-Don rejiggering of the show that they lost the bonus five hour show when there was a fifth Thursday. Not sure how they split it now. Maybe Puzzling Evidence is every week now.
Avatar 5:41pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

A Very Special Over the Edge
Avatar 5:43pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I love when I find myself getting lost remixing The Beatles. It is very child-like for me.
  5:43pm possibilitywaves:

Ok! Looking at some of the many Negativland recordings I have noticed on archive.org; some of them seem to be Over the Edge versions, and others are from the main era. Hopefully it will turn out to provide a balanced mix of both!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm fred:

I guess I should only listen to The Beatles this way
Avatar 5:45pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I think that I listened to the Beatles exactly like this as a kid tells me something about how I've always seen music (parts to be taken and moved around)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Rich in Washington:

There are several hundred Over The Edge shows on Archive.org, uploaded by volunteers within months of Don Joyce's passing. They're in their own collection. It's fun to listen to a random show. Over the Edge shows are much more chaotic compared to Negativland studio recordings.
Avatar 5:47pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Yes, conceptually Over the Edge (before Don Joyce's passing) are more in the family of this radio show (and likely something of an inspiration to me). Negativland studio recordings are a different universe from me.
Avatar 5:50pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I'm always worried this kind of playing is going to offend someone (the original artists or any fans). But it's the only way I hear things. It's how I always read books (in pieces, out of order, interleaved with other books). I realize there are many many many of us (interleaven)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Rich in Washington:

I think when all the Negativlads lived with or near each other, and were participating in the show weekly, they were using the show as a sketchbook for studio material. Sort of like how you can hear embryonic Firesign Theatre bits that would later appear on studio albums on Firesign's KPFA/KPFK radio programs (Dear Friends, Let's Eat, et al).
Avatar 5:51pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh wow where did I send the Beatles
  5:52pm possibilitywaves:

I had interpreted Over the Edge to be what Negativland was, by hearing pieces in many Last Evers over the years. So that is what I am most considering to begin with listening! Thank you Rich and Kenzo for your insight!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Rich in Washington:

For years, living outside of KPFA's broadcast area and before streaming audio, I was only familiar with OTE through the edited cassettes released by SST records. The actual program is really chaotic, sometimes shambolic, and probably best suited to people who aren't averse to sitting and listening somewhat attentively, desk-bound, iron lung, etc.
Avatar 5:58pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Oh btw, today's show was made significantly of tracks I used for a group dance mix on Friday. The dance is the choosing ground, and the show is the playing ground
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Rich in Washington:

We are all A kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Rich in Washington:

Radiohead's A Kid
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Rich in Washington:

That's who he is! Yes!
  6:03pm possibilitywaves:

I have only heard this show when standing up, it is surprising! In autumn 2011 i read about sitting being somewhat unnatural for humans. Since then, I stand up all day until going to sleep. I can't recommend it to anyone else per se, but it does feel unusually good and natural!
Avatar 6:04pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I'm rocking and sweating
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Rand al'Thor:

Rand here, checking in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Rich in Washington:

I am a walking, er... sitting testament regarding the longterm effects of sitting. I had a horrendously blown out disc and had to stand for about six months. I now use one of those fancy sit or stand desks and I love it. I try to spend as much time working while standing. Some of it is difficult due to the dexterity needed to illustrate or manipulate fine graphic elements, but it's better than sitting most of the work day.
Avatar 6:07pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Rand, time to check out
Avatar 6:14pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Thanks for slipping us a disc, Rich
Avatar 6:14pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This scene in Being There is one of the best ever
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm fred:

I'm a fan of standing in meetings. It's supposed to keep them shorter, but at least it helps me stay awake. I had to be nudged hard several time visibly asleep. A couple of times audibly so, I was told

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Rich in Washington:

I'm not sure what that means, but it seemed appropriate.

Avatar 6:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I am still proud of the show I played at a super avant garde spot on the Lower East Side where I got people to like Britney Spears before I finally made it recognizable enough and they were pisssssed
Avatar 6:26pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@Rich Oh but it's a kind grinder. A meat kinder
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm fred:

@Kenzo: I always try to forget Nickelback
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Rich in Washington:

It is. A thoughtful grinder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Rich in Washington:

I remember when that Paul's Extreme Stretch version of a Justin Bieber song came out and you'd hear these Avant Garde type DJs playing the Bieb. It was pretty funny.
Avatar 6:29pm northguineahills:

I onced djed a show, and was trying to get people to leave as it was closing time (I was doing slightly experimental club music). I tried John Cage, no one left. I tried Merzbow, no one left. I tried Mariah Carey, everyone fled!
Avatar 6:29pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Thumbs up, everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm fred:

@Kenzo: Is that one in your archives? (I mean the Britney Spears show)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm fred:

@ngh: I have a Stefan premium called "Clear the Party So You Can Go to Sleep". It wouldn't work with every crowd, though
Avatar 6:32pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@fred Checking lastever.org... , it appears to be "Short Stories" from Feb. 11, 2001. Not online. On a tape of some sort in a box.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Rich in Washington:

I only ever did soundscaping for dancing once but I was in this kind of treehouse-like loft and couldn't really see what the participants were doing, but it was still fun.
Avatar 6:42pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I am subtle with my soundscaping for the dance group but I massively enjoy building the transitions between songs. I drop some other things in but it's never more than 2 1/2 things at once

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Rich in Washington:

I'll leave when I'm good and ready.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Rich in Washington:

I'm finishing my coffee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm fred:

@Rich: I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think I've been to a restaurant this century. Unless you accept that Guinness is indeed food and a pub counts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Rich in Washington:
