A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@trouble : I'm referring to a newer project; I saw Rothenberg last year at the Subterranean Poetry Festival (come on up this year, Modern Worlders).
From his website:
"Rothenberg is currently writing a book and making a film about playing music with nightingales. One excerpt appears here. The book should arrive in 2018, from the University of Chicago Press."
So: Book promo opportunity!

College admissions is one thing. The requirement of a college degree for seemingly every job out there is another. I’m of the mind that most jobs that “require” a college degree are actually not anything close to needing a college degree. Another sign of the erosion of the middle class. I think there is utterly nothing wrong with simply getting a high school diploma and maybe 2 years and calling it a day. But society (at least in the U.S.) doesn’t agree with that.

There is now a shortage in the skilled trades as high school guidance counselors are actively pushing the "you must go get a 4 year degree in order to have a successful career". *poof* where did all the qualified diesel mechanics go?!

Patchwork has been one of my favorite tracks for a zillion years and I never knew there was an alternate version! And maybe a live version too? Whee!

Trades should be an alternative.
That was sort of Hank Rowan's vision, but not exactly.

I still owe almost $100k in student loans from grad school 15 years ago. of course, a lot of that was from having a major bike accident when I had no health insurance at the time.

Yes, fred, I do indeed have at least a few dollars every month, thanks to my cunning investments (ask me about buckwheat futures), hard work ethic and a complete disdain for vacations and "supersizing" any of my lunch choices. Not to brag...

Student insurance cost me $500/year when I was in college in the 90s. That covered two surgeries, so it saved my ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am
Trouble:

sorry to hear that @ NGH. i advise my students to stay as clear as possible from debt. community college for 2 years then apply to a money school if you need to. state schools are obviously cheaper and are seeing a huge uptick of smart students who can't afford private school tuition.

@trouble; It's still a great place but we need to push harder to bring students and faculty of color into the school, these voices have been missed in my department ( we're working on it )

@Itzall Ablurr: "Vacations?" Dreadful thing. I'd rather get paid, but my employer won't, so I take the boring time off. I don't work for free, that's not negotiable. I won't waste money on an actual vacation either, WFMU needs that dough

@Trouble: It was mostly the medical bills. I did my undergrad on scholarship. Grad school in NYC is expensive, I must say, even living in the ghetto...

@ItzallAblurr: As someone who has had—at times in my life—become a workaholic to simply survive, don’t romanticize, “hard work ethic” that much. Few of the people who are millionaires and billionaires out there got that fortune from “hard work.” The sad reality of American life (and in other places) is the “Protestant work ethic” is utter bunk.

Dear JakeGould, I'm so very sorry that chatting here does not feature a "sarcasm" emogee (sp?), but trust me when I tell you that I was kidding. You see, my icon is of a character very clueless, pompous and wealthy- it's a joke, seriously. I do not "aspire" to be that person in real life!

At least when it comes to software, the school you attended is BS. It only matters if you're going to be a "leader", in which case you're already loaded so it never mattered. Community college is the way to go. Nobody cares about your college after a year or so

@Fred-my mom always said, "Son you are going to college to work for a man who never went there who runs a business.". My boss DID attend college, BUT he worked in the trades doing sheetrock for 30 years and did test lab work for about 25.

@Fred-it is an elite Ivy-league level education for free. It was. Engineering, Art and Architecture. In a few years it should be free again. Why do they charge tuition? The board of directors built a multi-million dollar new building in Manhattant that they could not afford.
