I love the fetish-objects of postwar prosperity
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Little Danny:

"full tank of connectivity" sounds like a bad Beck lyric
  10:11pm
MrFab:

Hey all! "I love the fetish-objects of postwar prosperity" - a friend of mine just gave me a splendiferous coffee-table book called "Populuxe" all about just such totems.
Avatar 10:12pm
still b/p:

We should sit in a circle and pass such fetish objects around and think about their power. Or pound a shitload of nails into them, as is done with some other fetish objects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
coelacanth∅:

my mother had an esso tiger tail; and i got a hess truck for xmas one year, even though as far as i know my parents ONLY used esso. it couldn't be filled and emptied, but it did have working lights and fake smoke from the exhause pipe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
coelacanth∅:

i remember glass drinking glasses (mobile?) and aluminum coins (shell)...then everything turned to plastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm

MrF: just googled the book. I will be ordering

Esso's game was STRONG
Avatar 10:18pm
still b/p:

I remember getting little plastic toy antique cars, from Citgo I think, in late 60s. Remember when gas stations were all into games for a while...matching halves of fake money bills to win and such..?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
coelacanth∅:

oh yeah. my parents' brand loyalty was such that i felt a little ashamed when i bought shell when i started driving!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Franco Twinkie:

Coel, I still have my Esso die cast service island with two detachable pumps. Although, on the west coast we had Enco stations, but the sineage was the same.
Avatar 10:20pm
northguineahills:

I remember the Hess (do they still exist?
) vehicles in the 90s. I think Exxon did something similar in the 80s.
Avatar 10:21pm
still b/p:

I had a Shell gas-pump-suggestive transistor radio...but that was something you had to purchase, not a premium. I think it was dropped into the saltwater and lost off a dock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Little Danny:

@ngh: oh my god yes, HESS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Franco Twinkie:

Gulf stations would give out vacuformed " No Knock" horse shoes with sticky glue pads that would fuck up your paint when it got hot outside.
  10:24pm
MrFab:

Tjader! Dnny! Vibes!
"Populuxe" has great pics a-plenty, but the text is also interesting, pointing out how no one really knew how to live in post-war suburbs. it was all so new, e.g. freezers were slow to catch on due to getting frostbit fingers trying to extract ice-encrusted objects. Heh heh...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm

Oh yeah, 76 balls! We would go through the parking lot of Food Giant and see who could steal the most balls off car antennas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
coelacanth∅:

i never saw a single 76 fuel station when i was little. (but i knew of it via magazine ads)

Like the

I’m listening on the phone while the desktop is on in the other room, resulting in a delay/echo effect

Hi Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Little Danny:

Haha chresti, I know exactly the effect you speak of
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

Coel, I got it at the Toy Bin, which in 1967 was way ahead of the curve 'cause they had a box of plastic hippies for your model train set. I'm sure Frank Zappa was inspired to write Who Needs The Peace Corps when he saw these...that's just idle speculation, but what ever.
  10:42pm
chresti:

I grew up where 76 owned most of the land
  10:44pm
MrFab:

Toy plastic hippies! I have a bag of li'l mexican wrestlers, but no hippies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm

I like the idea of a postwar prosperity fetish object circle. Some of my favorites are mid-century motel postcards and matchbooks.

Franco plastic hippies! that's what we see today in fashion magazines and ads for clothing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm

As Charles Bukowski once said:"These kids just don't know."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth∅:

hi melinda
- i used to collect matchbooks and postcards (as well as bottles, bottle caps, beer paraphernalia and other stuff)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
coelacanth∅:

Franco yeah, the peace sign is a fashion accessory, like, strangely, the skateboard seems to have become.
  10:52pm
chresti:

Franco sorry you didn’t get tha plastic hippy for your special day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Franco Twinkie:

Like the peace symbol could be dangerous to your health if you wore on in the wrong crowd. Today, the skateboard can be....you know where i'm going with this.
  10:55pm
MrFab:

I have some of those postcards melinda, and a couple bowls of matchbooks. Not to mention cocktail/bar stuff, tikis, pulp paperbacks, hawaiian shirts, ashtrays, lamps...oh, and records. Got some of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm

Just want an unpeeled STP sticker over here
  10:55pm
chresti:

I like that idea, coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
coelacanth∅:

ha - i just opened an email about a product line by the "mad hippie" company.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Franco Twinkie:

The STP factory was not to far from where I grew up. thus the area was flooded with stickers -small,medium and large. You were The Shit if you had the large one on your Pee-Chee folder at Flanner Elementary School in the 60's.

went to get something out of my car at the office, and there was a juvenile doe right next to it. It then jumped over a drainage ditch into a meadow, stared at me as I took pics, and then slipped through a hole in the fence of the property (office park).
